I have only had my 04 Yukon 5.3 for about 6 months. The previous owner said he had a new water pump put on not too long before I bought it, and the pump does look new, its a GMB. But I noticed a leak in the driveway that I thought was oil, until it evaporated with little residue.

I got under there today, and I can see where there is water/coolant dripping off the bottom side of the water pump. All the hoses are tight, and dry, and from above everything looks good. Also, the side of the water pump pulley is dry. So any leaks are coming from between the block and pump, or from the back of the pump itself.

Should I just throw an AC Delco pump on it? Or could it be something else.

This is how it started for me when my water pump gave out. it got increasingly worse...but little by little. then one day im driving and the damn thing gave out. smoke and antifreeze all over. if you can afford to and have the time id suggest you get it done before it goes rather than after. its a big pain in the ass. I had to have the truck towed. i paid more than i shouldve if i had recognized the issues. They put on a Gates after market. been good every since.

I remember once I was going down the highway and I told a woman driving a Denali to pull over and check her vapor trail, sure enough her water pump had just given up. She was from another state so you can only imagine how that went. I would just get a decent quality pump since you don't want to do it twice. That is my new policy since I've had terrible luck trying cheaper stuff. I changed my pinion seal to a dorman couple of months ago just for it to give out 2 months later. Installed a yukon mighty seal thing is bone dry to this day. There are things you can cheap out on but a water pump wouldn't be it for me. I would get an A/C delco and call it a day.

^^^ this. If the pump is really failing, I think it would be leaking from the weep hole, not the gasket.

Im just going to put a Delco pump on it. I figure even if its just a gasket, if I'm going to do all the work to change them, I may as well put a pump on it. I will do the drive belts and thermostat while I'm in there.

Do it once, and do it right...

Thanks for all the responses!

So get this:

All the parts showed up today. But something about the water pump seemed off. It came in a plain brown box, not a Delco box. And even though it had an ink AC Delco stamp, the casting was really rough. I googled the casting number, and it came up with an aftermarket company called Eastern Industries. Plus even though it was listed as a 'Kit", I was jus the pump. I got a counterfeit pump!

I returned to to Amazon and went to my local mom and pop parts sore and bought a Gates pump. I have to have the truck fixed for Monday, so no time to wait for a Delco to show up.

That sticks. Rock auto FTW. The gates is good, too.
