Is it possible to install the shoes backwards? Meaning leading/trailing shoe. Or are they identical?

When I did mine, they looked identical. These shoes are just a HOLD part and not a SLOW DOWN part. Sorry, but that is my best way of trying to describe the difference.

PNW VietVet has it correct. They are exactly the same and no longer an "Emergency Brake". They are now just a "Parking Brake". The only interesting thing is they are installed exactly like this photo. The DS has the opening on top and the PS has the opening on the bottom. Adjusters are of course in the respective openings. They do now make a two piece shoe for those that can't, or don't want to fight with the one piece version going on. They can be a challenge sometimes.
