Been driving the family's spare 2008 328i due to longer commutes...and in typical BMW/Mercedes fashion (personal experience with both), they're amazing until they don't work. Dealer wants $1,900 to replace oil filter gasket, 2 radiator hoses and replace radiator. Towing home to see what a local shop can do it for. The oil pan gasket and valve cover gaskets also "need" replacing, but I'm not forking out that 2k either.

On to the relevant info: still towing like a champ, even after I replaced the z71 springs for regular Moog ones.

I'll never have another German car for just that reason. They're so over-engineered that they're impossible to work on so it costs a fortune for basic repairs. Ridiculous.

I have the H.O. box from Jl and it doesn't have a cover to protect the woofer. My tackle box rocked over and was touching the surround of the woofer. It was like a woodpecker on a tree when I turned the stereo on and it tore through the surround. Not pretty.Lots of JL fans here for good reason. Everybody said it was like to 12s instead of 1. Tight, hard hitting bass without being boomy since it's sealed. It made everything sound sound good. I run it with the JL1000 and its power hungry and at full tilt I could stall my truck with the stock alternator because it pulled so much juice. The shop (Tweeter/R.I.P.) that did the install got a complaint from the store next to them because it was knocking stuff off their walls!! JL had to send a 2nd box to the shop because it blew the first one apart...insane is exactly how I would describe it.

My "spare" BMW (really the autocross/track car) is similar. Amazing when it works fine, but it recently went through 2 alternators in 200 miles. Seems like this latest is working fine.

I just did the oil filter gasket on my mother's X6 with an N55 motor. I get why the cost is so high, since the book calls to remove the intake manifold. In reality, you loosen it and pull it off half the studs to get to the last oil filter housing bolt. Took me around 3 hours, and $30, to do it my first time around.

That's what I'm talking about- an oil filter gasket that stays on the engine and eventually needs a half a day to change instead of one that comes on the oil filter itself so it gets replaced every time the filter gets changed like a normal vehicle. They build them so they make a fortune on service.

I have a 2011 328i and change the gasket every time I change the filter. It is included with the $8 Mann filters I buy off Amazon. Either the dealership is blowing smoke where the sun doesn't shine or it is being misnamed.

Best part about that BMW's oil change? The filter is on the top of the motor... It is the easiest and cleanest oil change I have ever done.

That's crazy about the X6, though!

I worked behind enemy lines at a BMW service dept. I've seen all I need to see to know to never buy a BMW ever in my life. Waaayyy over engineered. Don't get me wrong any bmw is beautiful inside and out and the Germans have crazy and good ideas but usually implement them before they have been proven to work.
