We had our once-a-year snow event here last week. It lasted 4 days and no salt was used anywhere I went. It can be used here in extreme circumstances on certain steep areas of roads and freeways but it’s only some small sections which I avoid. Glad to not have to worry about it.

They salt the roads so heavily in areas around town it sounds like you're driving on a gravel road. Its excessive. That being said, the truck was totally thrashed exterior wise and just the hose sprayed off most of it, the wash was super easy. God I love ceramic coatings haha

I'm betting that I'll need a new crank when i pull the pig apart.
maybe I'll get lucky. :jester:

Hope not:(

Are you 100% sure its ate a bearing or just some flakes in the oil? Is it making noise?

I'm asking all these things because I just did essentially the same thing you did. 200k mile short block but replaced everything else. We did check on main journal and rod cap on each journal. They all looked brand new.

edit: here is one of the rods. They all looked like that. Still the factory lines

Just flakes in the oil.

So from some testing i did before i took the thing apart for the dod delete.
I got flakes once, but i had done some high rpm wot pulls up the canyon.

I saw the flakes, but my oil drain pan was dirty.
And i had just done rings on an old snow blower, so lots of alumnium in the drain pan.

When i drained i had some backing up of that pan (something funky about it's vent).
i saw the sparkles float up as it filled and slowly drained into the lower compartment.

it still had the oil from that snow blowers engine at the bottom, except the color was wrong.

so i kept a close eye on it, changed a little while later while trying to flush out that oil pump and gain back some of my oil pressure.

drained again twice and and never saw the flakes again, so i dismissed it.
While i had the engine a part i looked over the cam bearings (shared a picture earlier), and i gave the rods a little shake to see if anything odd feeling or inconstant about them.

Now fast forward to this last oil change, i did some WOT pulls right at the end of the break in cycle of the new cam shaft and rockers.
And i saw a bunch of this same colored sparkles in the oil.

Do i know it's a main bearing?
Not yet!

Only real noise i noticed was a almost a screeching sound.
At first i thought it could be something with the original lifters, or cam bearing related.

Most of this i blame on either the alternator, AC, or power steering.

Now i don't know what to believe.

I also heard a weird sound from the rear of the engine right after the dod delete.
And right after my tech2 did weird things, and created a techm related error until i reset the battery.
It almost sounded like the converter, making me go "Ffffffuuuuu" for not pulling the engine and doing the converter while i had everything apart.

So yeah, I'm open to the idea that i might be slightly loosing my mind. :jester:

I also knew that if i pulled the engine, i would have had it freshened up while it was out.
Meaning more $$

Cylinder #2 also had a slightly wavy look to it near the bottom of the stroke..
could have been the light, but i went with the idea of give me a few years and I'll plan on the next engine while i run it as is.

And my idle oil pressure hot, has dropped a little since the last oil change.
it's well with-in spec, and my oil pressure above 5k is fantastic with the new pump.

I would do another flush with some cheap oil and see what happens. I couldn't remember the details of yours as I don't frequent this thread often. If she aint knockin, drive it til it is.

I remember your cam bearing pic, I think I responded. It looked fine to me. Mine looked the same way. These engines don't generally have main, rob bearing issues unless they were starved of oil or something. Hopefully its just some residual break in material and flakes in the pan. Also, fingers crossed that mine will be fine..lol

What mileage is yours? I pulled the motor because I'm rebuilding the trans too (And **** 4wd and fighting the oil pan while laying on my back...).

Also using my new handy dandy oil filter opener tool, I did take a good look at the filter media, and even removed a nice little section using a razor blade to see in detail.
I didn't see anything that bad.

but i did see a nice small shard of what i believe to be aluminum in the filter.
As in shiny silver, but my magnet didn't pull it out of the filter.

And my mileage is nearly 180k (might have gone over 180k, i choose to not pay attention).

As for running it as is, i'm fine with that.
However i did put in some expensive parts that i would really like to not replace.
And if a main bearing, slop could end up damaging my nice working 6 speed trans...

And the thought of tearing this thing apart again = dread.
I spent a few weeks on this the first time around.

And i cut my self off from any beer intake for about 1 month!
0 mistakes i said.

So i feel good about the work i performed, but it's always one of those "while I'm in there" tasks you skip that get you! :banghead:

Half way tempted to yank the oil pan once more, and pop off some main bearing caps.
I'm getting pretty good at removing and reinstalling the front axle now.

the secrete appears to be tie down straps to hold the cv shafts, and the front drive shaft out of the way.
