What's causing my wheels to do this?

I have the exact same issue but it covers several of my wheels. As stated before, you have to remove clear coat then polish and clear again. I am not looking forward to trying to remove the clear on the wheels. I will not paint mine either. I may look for some take offs from a newer rig and then sell mine.

Here's my wheels I found on Craigslist. Pretty corroded under the chrome/clear coat. Sanded it all off, starting with 80 grit sand paper on an orbital sander. And worked with finer grits all the way to 00 steel wool. Than applied wax to protect them. A couple hours a wheel.

yeah those look great now. i need to bite the bullet and give it a shot on mine

You can remove the damaged clear coat from that area and reapply sealer. If your spare is the same wheel try it first so you know how much to remove.
