The reason I ask is I'm buying tires and an alignment this weekend and Im wanting to buy 285 Nitto Terra Grapplers but I can't spend 300 bucks on new shocks just yet. I was going to run the shock extenders for a few months until I can new shocks.

Plenty of people run them. Order the ones you need and install. Then when funds are good get 5100s

Yes there is some truth to it, actually a lot. Basically any key lift will decrease the down travel of stock suspension. I recommend RCX or FTS UCAs if your close to the droop stops after installing keys. My old Yukon was fine without them but could have been better with them. Install the keys and 1.5" spacer then get longer 5100s.

Not looking to raise the back just crank the stock keys to level it out. I have z71 so the rear is already a where I want it. Can I fit 285s with out leveling it?

Yes you can crank the front without shock extenders and can clear 285s. Might need to trim the lower valance corner but no issues only little plastic trimming.
