Hey everyone, I have a 2006 Yukon 5.3, excellent shape. Recently its been smelling like gas in the garage and even near the vehicle. I assume it has something to do with the Egt system. I got a code for large evap leak about 20,000 miles ago and changed that little solenoid near the gas tank. This time no code and it actually smells like gas. Thinks its the same solenoid? I have no codes.

You need a smoke machine to do a smoke test to figure out where in the EVAP system you are leaking.

Ha!
Ok, I think first step will be getting my ass under there to inspect everything. Problem is its wet under there alot during winter. I guess I should check the evap canister too to make sure it doesnt have fuel in it? I have never had a vehicle emit such a strong gas smell. I'm slightly worried safety wise since my kids are getting hauled around In it.

Yea, look and see if you have a gas leak! Then move to the next steps. You can look under there while someone just turns key to run position and see if you see gas dripping anywhere.

I had the same issue last year on my 04 and it turned out to be my fuel pump. Check the underside of your tank mine was leaking from the top and running under the tank.

Thanks for the tips guys, I have a metal fan blowing on the underside right now trying to dry it all off. It really smells pretty strong in the garage.
edit: I have not however, noticed anything leaking on the ground. Though gasoline would evaporate fairly quickly I suppose.

Ok I don't really see anything that looks wet. It seems to be a stronger smell when the tank is full. I think there might be some drips of fuel mixed with the road water towards the rear most tank strap ?
Also, what is the square box that the evap solenoid is mounted to? I have a picture..

Was your smell stronger when you filled up? Was it the gasket around the top of the pump that failed? Pretty sure mine is the original pump at 154,000 miles.

Does sound like the leak is at the top where the pump/sender drops in and leaks when full and sloshing. The seal there is likely the culprit. If you drain the tank and drop it you will see where the fuel has leaked because the area where it would get wet will be cleaner than the rest and hopefully still dark/moist.

That rectangular plastic box is your EVAP/Charcoal canister. You can take it down to see if there is in-fact fuel in it.

Yes it was noticeably stronger when I filled up, after the last fill up I waited until I was under 1/4 tank so it wasn't so heavy and dropped the tank and it was the seal/ring that locks the pump in place that was leaking. I was at about 120,000 when mine failed.
