I have seen the signal bar on 2018+ vehicles with the WiFi option. My 2017 Yukon came with WiFi, but the signal meter does not display on that one. We have never subscribed to On-star and it has always displayed automatically on our 2018 Equinox. In fact... I tried to turn it off once and couldn't.

2017 Yukon SLT here and it displays on my radio. I too tried to turn it off and couldn't as I use Android Auto for everything including hot spot.
