Generally speaking, no. A bad cap/rotor will make it run like crap but if it's sparking it should be enough to at least start. They are cheap and the Autozone stuff comes with a 5 year warranty so it may be worth it to swap and test.

Well, come to find out the person that was going to buy it, but wanted to see if he could get it running said it had good spark (which I didn't see since I was turning the key). I went out and pulled the #1 plug and put it in the wire, and had someone turn the key, and no spark. Pulled the cap, and all the points inside were covered in a white ashy substance and looked like they were no longer flat on the ends. Put new cap and rotor in this morning and she fired right up. Took her a few miles to finally run smooth, but have a bit of a high idle at times, since I lost one of the bolts that holds the plastic plenum on the upper intake. Now to get the suspension, front calipers, sway bar links, and all bushings replaced. Glad I didn't sell it, couldn't find another that had the interior in as good shape as mine.

Thanks. The Airtex Fuel Pump was going bad again (after 18 months or so), since it was reading 1/4 tank and it was almost 3/4 full.

Filled up at Murphy Oil yesterday and while fueling the attendant was checking fuel level in the tanks. Drove to another stop then home. Went to start it last evening and wouldn't start. I hear the fuel pump. Would he have stirred up enough crap to clog filter? Have replaced the fuel spider in Feb.

Unless he was using a paddle to check the ground tanks, the straight stick wouldnt stir up enough, and even if it did, it would not reach the pump for a long period of time. If you hear the pump, check your pressure on your fuel line (right before the fuel spider), and then check your cap/rotor (wish I would have dont that at first, and not wasted so much time messing around with other stuff)

It's the pump. Crawled under there yesterday and nothing. Is AC Delco the recommended replacement or is this an any brand change?
