The history shows either the high Amp fuse (400 Amp) for the starter and/or the fuse block needs to be replaced when the engine cranking current gets too high. What many people do not realize is with the Push Button start engines, if the engine has an extended crank or will not crank, you can push the Push Start button to cancel the crank timer from the ECM.

I have seen a number of 6.2l engines that before they hard failed would shut off driving down the road. Then would often restart almost immediately or after sitting for a bit. Many of the locked up 6.2l engines would either require the replacement of the high Amp fuse and/or fuse block because the starter would be engaged in the engine that would not turn and the ECM crank timer is running for 5-10 seconds and the fuse blows/melts the fuse block.

I have even heard about a few cases where the fuse blows or the fuse block melts and needs to be replaced and within a short period of time the 6.2l engine seizes. So unfortunately is it not as far fetched of an idea that the engine may be on the way out and may already have signs of metal in the oil while it is still running.

I guess we will know if the OP ever reports back that the engine has failed in their vehicle.
My truck died on me yesterday. Shut off during a decel and got the restart engine message. Tried to restart it and it cranked over one time real slow and then stopped. It’s at the dealer now. The dealer just told me it needs a new fuse block. It sure sounds like I’m headed for engine failure. Other than making sure they tried to turn the engine over manually and making them check the oil for metal, what should I do? Can I make them measure cranking amps and see if the numbers within spec or something? This truck has 88,000 miles on it and is a 2022 so I am out of warranty. You also mentioned that history shows a failed fuse block could be heading for a failed 6.2 L. Do you remember seeing other threads on that in the forum? Or can you point me to where you’re getting that history? I’ll try to use it with the dealer.

This is a pretty classic case of the engine bearings starting to spin. Often the engine dies and when it cools off, if you can get it to crank again, it will restart and run for a while before rinse and repeat. This is either if the fuse block did not blow or if the fuse block was replaced.

The ONLY reason for the fuse block/Fuse to blow is high engine cranking current. Possibly could be a bad battery, but likely the engine is on the way out, especially since it died on you.

So the good/bad news is the mileage is rather high. BUT with the 6.2l Recall for 0W40 engine oil, you may be in luck. The problem is the only thing I have seen released so far is the dealer stop hold order on inventory either new, CPO or used. It clearly states on page 3 of the GM document, "regardless of age or mileage"!

But since this so new of a recall, not everyone will have their head around what the rules are. NHTSA has not even released their document last I looked.

Here is what I would do. Have the dealer to scan for any Pending OBDII codes, if you have a Pending P0016, this is a major red flag for engine failure from what the recall states. Have the dealer remove the oil filter only at this point and inspect for metal. They may need to cut the filter open, at this point someone at the shop should have an oil filter cutter and they should know what to look for.

If the filter is clean, then you are probably looking at maybe a battery issue. If the filter had metal in it, we know what the issue is. If the filter is clean, a new filter, $10, check the battery, make sure there is no Pending P0016 and cross your fingers!

I would expect based on the recall, you vehicle should fit the window and I would hope if the engine failed you would get a replacement engine, but this is somewhat virgin territory at this exact moment.

Good luck and report back.
