What weight oil do you use in the South?

How is it humbug, if nearly every car sold in america is now spec'ing 0W20, 0W16, 0W12 ... ? The minuscule MpG improvements get multiplied by MILLIONS of vehicle sales for carmakers. It's not worth the increase in wear FOR INDIVIDUAL OWNER / USERS, granted. That's what air curtains, air dams...

What weight oil do you use in the South?

How sure are you that the oil filter had nothing to do with this improvement? Asking because plenty of people have noticed some oil filters run quieter than others, especially at startup.

    2019 PPV Help

Police (and neo-Luddites) consider 'auto headlights' either a pain in the @$$, if not potential danger - cops NEED to be able to keep the lights off in far more situations than normal people. It's possible the previous PD found some way to disable this bug that you would happily consider a...

    What to buy

What if you find an older rustfree southern GMT900 or GMTK2xx with maybe a bit more miles on it? Despite salty northeastern winters, I'll hang on to my GMT821 as long as reasonably possible. In your shoes, I'd be VERY happy with a GMT900 (07-14), assuming Engine Half@$$ was already disabled and...

Maybe not all 6.2's have the bad lifter bore/ bearing wear issues

In Spanish: lo barato, sale caro. In English: What starts out cheap, turns out expensive. Strongly suspect that GM tried to 'pinch a penny' somewhere (head castings?), and they are now regretting it. Pennywise, pound foolish ... an ounce of prevention is often worth a pound (sterling) of cure...

The engine on the Yukon I got as a replacement for the Yukon that got two engine replacements needs replaced. Yes, you read that correctly.

The 6.2L all call for 5W20, which'd make 5W30 'acceptable'. I'd generally prefer 0W20 or 0W30, so that the oil gets back up top as quickly as possible after cold startups. Mobil1 0W40 is BARELY 40wt at normal operating temps, and acts more like 30wt as it ages. I wonder what other 0W40 or 5W40...

Continuing the above ... The torque converter clutch's ONLY goal is MpG, specifically, enhancing MpG in the gear you're already in. The above assumes the goal at the moment is to improve MpG, which is why the 6L80 8L90 & 10L80 are capable of locking the TCC in every gear (except 1st). (Even the...

    Afm

Separate from Engine Half@$$ / Cylinder Confusion, torque converter lockup is another tradeoff between MpG vs durability / longevity. When MpG is the goal AND the risk to the powertrain is lowest - when driving 'gently' - locking the TCC helps MpG and has little to no negative impact on...

It's also GM's stance, on two different subjects. Engine Half@$$ (I've no respect for V4 mode) isn't good for the engine or the transmission. It trades engine longevity & durability for not enough MpG. GM tunes the torque converter clutch behavior differently between civilian / 1500 vehicles...

Which flavor of “LS” do I have after replacement

If your dealership was cool / awesome enough to have upgraded your 5.3L in any meaningful way, [EDIT] they'd've bragged about it, you'd've known all about it, you'd've paid more for it, and most importantly, you'd not be asking what engine you have - you'd be bragging about getting an engine...

    Engine swap

Just swap in a Gen3 6.0L, retune your pcm, rebuild your 4L60E. Not original, but it's been done countless times before; you can follow that roadmap blind.

Is their a newer style rear bumper that is a direct fit on a 2002 Yukon XL?

So, is this another way of saying, I can't SIMPLY install a GMTK2 rear bumper on my GMT800, without also changing my hitch? Is the GMTK2 hitch superior to the GMT800 hitch?

Is their a newer style rear bumper that is a direct fit on a 2002 Yukon XL?

So, a GMT800 pickup / suv rear bumper fits on GMT800 pickups & suvs interchangeably? OK, I guess ... So tired of BS. That said, if this is true, I'd love to see a GMTK2 rear bumper on a GMT800.

Welp…. Ya Fix One Thing…..Dreaded Lifter Tick

Since we were talking about Engines Half@$$, want to keep Gen3 V8s out of it? Gen4 V8s with Engine Half@$$, vs Gen4 V8s without Engine Half@$$? The later still suffer from splayed pushrods?

    Rotors have scratches. Normal?

Instead of two flat surfaces rubbing each other off (heheh), the pad is goring / gouging the rotor. The gouged rotor is at an increased likelihood of warping from increased temperatures. Other possibilities include the pad breaking into pieces, or the rotor cracking ... Study the braking market...

Welp…. Ya Fix One Thing…..Dreaded Lifter Tick

Did those techs say that those Full-@$$ lifters were in Half-@$$ / Gen4 V8 engines? Or Full-@$$ / Gen3 V8s? Then consider all the techs that none of us will ever speak with. Gen3 LS / Vortec V8s are better designed, spec'd, and manufactured than either Gen4 small blocks, or Gen5 / LT small blocks.

Welp…. Ya Fix One Thing…..Dreaded Lifter Tick

I'll stipulate to this after I ask a question: Isn't it true that the Full-@$$ lifters fail less often than the Half-@$$ lifters? In other words, aren't Half-@$$ lifters (even) more crappy than Full-@$$ lifters?

2016 Yukon SLT-Hot engine towing up steep 7 mile grade

AFTER THE FACT Short answer: YES! Longer answer: I am a pessimist, certainly, when compared to the above. The amount of money someone would have to pay me to let coolant AND/OR ATF temp REACH 230F - nevermind exceed 239F - would cover the purchase of 2 or 3 used GMT800s in serviceable condition...

Welp…. Ya Fix One Thing…..Dreaded Lifter Tick

So, GM is so cheap, that not only did they not bother to improve / fix the lifter design, they ALSO: 1. have pushrods that are too weak? 2. are misaligning the pushrods by cocking them at an angle relative to the lifter? 3. possibly both? Hang on to your GMT400s & GMT800s, y'all ...

Welp…. Ya Fix One Thing…..Dreaded Lifter Tick

Even if GM actually bothered to spend money to improve the Variable Lifter Oil Manifold Assembly, the root problem is still that the 'Off-On' lifters are not as robust / durable / long-term reliable as their simpler predecessors that are always On. (Maybe they should have improved on 'Rhoads'...

6.2 not a good idea because of issues?

Exactly. They're so focused on next quarter growth, that they fail to consider: Instead of trying to squeeze more juice out of the same fruit, we shoulda been planting orchards. Most vehicle making companies begrudgingly (NOT publicly) admit that one of their main competitors is the used car...
