I'm looking to replace my sub with something that has a little more bump but not beat down the block....I've seen MTX and the box with amp thing that they have...thats nice and all but I'm not lookin to spend that kind of money....all I want to do is slap a JL or something else in the stock place and call it done. A friend of mine says I can just put an amp on the stock sub and it will be just as good but I think that is crap....plus I really don't want to have to wire an amp...any suggestions? Is there any kind of special sub I will need? Keep in mind all I want to do is just replace the stock sub. I believe the stock sub is an 8" right?

Im far from the right person to ask.. but I believe if you're wanting to put a new sub in there, you're going to have to put a new amp in as well..
The stock amp wont power an aftermarket sub to make it sound any better than the one thats in there now..
But you will want to put a new sub in, cuz even with an aftermarket amp it wont sound great.
Just my .02...

Unfortunately you'll have to get a new box to put inside the panel. The factory box is formed around the sub, and the goofy shape of the mount ring doesn't allow you to put an aftermarket sub in there.

Yea you have to power it.. there is little you can do about low wattage and high ohm load..

For the record there is NOTHING short of dynamite youre gonna put in that spot that would "beat down the block" but i believe there is an Earthquake SWS sub that will fit in there perfect.. and run the correct ohm load.. but your looking at spending $150/$200 to turn your system on a scale from 1/10 from a 2 to a 2.5 lol.. waste of money imo..

That expensive ass mtx box is garbage too imo.. sure.. ill admit your truck will sound JUST like a chevy cavalier with the oem premium sound option installed... maybe

Your options there are pretty limited.. you CAN do a console between the rear buckets and get some nice sound.. or a small box somewhere... or you can try to pack and power an 8 in the stock box.. but either way.. to sound better... youre gonna need an amp.

Why are you so concerned about space that you are unwilling to give up a single square foot of airspace? You can fit a sealed 12 or a ported 10 in an area about the size of a pair of shoe boxes.. and will be alot happier with the sound.

I like the factory look....and Ive had subs in my previous vehicle and didn't like the box and amp always moving around and all the extra wiring and such...plus I said "not beat down the block" so I'm ok with only an 8" or 10" sub.....basically I'm just lookin at bang for the buck here...without all the extra wiring issues....plug and play is what I'm lookin for....

i never said put a ****** box that was gonna be moving around.. or do a crappy wiring job.. the only reason i said a 12 is becuase a sealed 12 and a ported 10 are about the same airspace depending on the sub. Even a single 8 will sound ok IF its a HIGH rms 8.. but then you need a big box and some power.. so we still cant do it off the factory amp..

Check out the Earthquake stuff.. its.. not amazing.. but it is the best bet for a stock box stock amp sitch imo... its what all the bmw guys replace their under seat subs with on the Logic7 sound systems.

You can do a single amp under the seat and a single 12 in a truck box or a ported 10 in a discreet factory carpet wrapped box and not lose your stock look..

I think youre under the impression that im one of the dudes on here with 6 18s in the back but im not.. i only do really high end, really sema stock builds.. and in fact we are working with a company now to do 2 bad ass 8s.. in a stock like center console.. that will do 130db at 34hz and NO ONE will know its there.. but the prototype just got done and we wont be market ready for months..

Im not trying to talk you into going crazy man..just trying to get you the most sound and cleanest look for the dollar.

stick a slim mount sub in there with a small hidden 200-300 watt amp, be nice addition, and stealth.

kinda like that idea.....was thinking about putting the amp under the center console...that way I don't even have to pull the stock wires off I can just tap into the ones in the rear unit...(ofcourse I would disconnect them first)......
