My instrument cluster periodically quits working and all of my idiot lights come on and all my gauges except speedo and tach quit working. Here is a video showing exactly what happens.

http://vimeo.com/35080225

Sometimes, I'll hear 3 dings and all of the gauges will work again for a time but they soon return to their broken state.

I've done lots of internet searches and many people talk about bad stepper motors, etc but this just doesn't seem to me to be what is happening since it's not just one or two gauges acting erratic. My DIC display will also quit working and will display "Unkown Driver" as seen in the video.

Does anyone have this problem? Any ideas about what the problem is?

Was anything last worked on or changed before this started happening?
Anything, new stereo, oil change, etc?
The old saying goes "look first where the human was last".
I'm not saying you or anyone else screwed something up, but you gotta start somewhere.

PS: my Denali gauges went crazy and then dead when I test drove it- the battery was dead and a shop put a new battery and all was fine. Well, until the hub/wheel speed sensor went bad, but that was a different issue.

Thanks M3PO. This has actually been going on for well over a year. There was nothing done to the vehicle preceding the beginning of the problem (at least within a 6 month time frame). This started out happening only once or twice a week then progressively got worse. Now it normally starts out with the gauges not working (unless it's really hot or really cold) then occassionally the gauges will ding and work for a short time.

I have checked the battery and it is strong.

I doubt this is the problem but start by checking the plug connection on the back of the cluster. Just a thought.

Also, check the harness plug for any loose wires in the back of the plug, make sure the pins are sitting in the plug the correct depth to make proper contact!!
