05 tahoe RPM issue

Hey guys new to the group. Bought an 05 Tahoe z71 that runs great. Only issue is my RPM gauge reads “0” at idle. It idles just fine and the gauge will go up when I drive but when it hits 1k rpm it feels like it should be way more like 3-4k rpm. Thought it was the stepper motor but I just soldered all new steppers last night and still having the issue. Anyone else have this problem before?

Hook up a scanner that has live data and see what the ECU is reporting for RPM. If that looks good, sounds like a cluster issue.

It was doing the exact same thing before you replaced the stepper motor?

Thank you! And yes it was doing the same thing before I did the stepper motors.

If the scanner's rpm agrees with the cluster's value, then I'd be looking at the crankshaft position sensor. If you do replace that, recommend OE brand and do a CASE relearn after changing.

You could try using something like this to independently check the rpm; I use something similar on small engines:

Has that low mileage been verified? That can also happen when a cluster has previously been rebuilt and the needles weren't put back in the correct orientation. Mine is a little off also. I removed my cluster needles and didn't put them back on correctly.

When I had it apart the Speedo was the only stepper that was replaced before, everything else was factory

Did it work correctly when you 1st bought it? I assume you bought it used.
To replace 1 or all stepper motors all the needles need to come off, correct?

Yea all needles need to come off, even to just do 1 stepper. Did the same thing when I bought it, could it be in the wrong spot?

What's the scanner show and how does that compare to the gauge?
