120k maintenance tune up on 99 Denali

Hi guys!

I'm a new member here.
So I have a 99 Denali, and I went in for a quote on a 120k tune up.
They quoted me @ around $1000 dollars. I don't mind paying this, if this is an avg quote, but at the same time I'm not sure if they are trying to rip me off or what. I had always thought tune ups run around 400-500.

Can anyone help, and also, what should be included in this tune up.

Did they say what they were including in the tuneup and the manufacturer of the parts they will use? (i.e. AC Delco)

As an example - if they are only changing the air filter ($20), plugs ($50), wires ($50), rotor ($11), cap ($50), fuel filter ($10), greased bearings (<$5), MAF cleaned (<$5) I wouldn't pay them anywhere near $1000...if that was all they included, it seems awfully expensive to me.

However, if they are also going to service the rear diff, transmission, and transfer cases with new fluids/gaskets/filters...then it may be worth it b/c of the time involved and the piece of mind knowing the tougher items were completed by a professional.

Maybe someone on here has had a complete maintenance performed on their SUV by a shop/dealer and can chime in.

If you're interested to do this yourself, maintenance on these SUV's is pretty simple...there are how-to videos on-line and if you ask for a list of items to purchase, I can easily post the manuf #'s and an inexpensive place to purchase them. Plus, with all the money you save, you can buy all the tools you need and have $100s left over!! (plus the satisfaction of your own tune-up)

I've personally never brought my car in for these services, so only take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Quick side note:
Unless your vehicle has had regular service intervals on your transmission, DO NOT FLUSH YOUR TRANMISSION FLUID!!!

Even with regular service, most people still only have the trans drained, new filter and have it filled...flushing it may cause your trans to slip.

Yes, the have told me that they will use all AC Delco parts.

To your original point, even in NJ, $1000 is a lot of money if they are only doing a basic tune-up on a GM vehicle!! But if they are doing a complete job and including tranny, front and rear it might be worth it.

Use the 1000k column. Also do the cooling system now instead of 150k. Can you do this yourself and save yourself over $500 at least?

So here's the part breakdown with the part cost/labor cost

Distributor cap - 78/43
Ignition cable set - 213/120
Spark plug - 120/119
Ignition rotor - 18/43
Air filter element - 43/34
Fuel filter - 21/43

All parts are ac delco and labor @ 85/hr

Do these prices seem reasonable?

In red are the actual prices if you purchase from retailers. Also, it takes 1 min and 35 seconds to replace the air filter element...not sure why they are quoting you 34min, or over $40 to put in an air filter!!!

All the AC Delco parts will listed there for you. Plug in the 15% discount coupon and you will get 15% off plus a $50 coupon b/c you're going to spend over $100.

No need for a new coil unless you are having starting problems.

For AC Delco spark plug wires and the gas filter, buy them on Amazon from the AC Delco rep...they are $50 and $10 respectively...on autozone they are ridiculously overpriced for those two items.

Then take that $50 coupon and buy replacement fluids...IMO fluids are rarely discounted and if spend $100, use your coupon and you'll get your next purchase for $50. I just did a tune-up a few wks ago and this is what I did.

It called part up charge that is one way a shop makes a profit. What a ripoff the dealer would sell you spark cable set for about $100 yet the shop wants $200.

They are also using time estimate from the vehicle manufacturer which includes thing like opening and closing your hood, prep, packing box removal, retrieving from stock and such.
