Never seen a halfshaft cage come apart like this before. As you can see in the pic there was still grease in the joint. The cage said no more and all of the ball bearings but 2 said hey hey good bye. Made a clicking sound like a bad hub but otherwise drove fine. I deferred the new halfshaft install to tomorrow and just left the stub in the hub. Im no longer 25 anymore. Dont have the patience or attitude for immediate vehicle maintenance anymore. Especially parts that decide to die in the winter.

that cv joint likely owes you nothing lol

if you got a grease splatter line under the truck that boot had been leaking for a good while already. cause theres not very much grease on that really.

Grease was all up in the outer boot where that cage was supposed to be assembled before it ejected. I literally just unbolted halfshaft from diff and pulled halfshaft out of the outer joint to remove it. Halfshaft is 7-10 yrs old. 4x4 usually only used in winter for 4-5 months and only on snow/ice days. Otherwise halfshaft is just there freewheeling with no torque applied to it.

Or boot was split and slinging grease and something got in there to accelerate the damage. Gotta be cockroaches. Those little buggers are everywhere and they cannot be killed off.
If you had no notification, drive with the volume turned down more. Was that an original axle?
