Honestly, I didn't find it that bad. You don't have to drop the whole diff. It's enough to loosen the passenger side mount and the bolts for the CV axle flange, and let it hang. I then dropped the steering rack and let it hang from the tie rods and also removed the cross member. I could do the job again in 2 hours and am just about to because I'm putting a new oil pump in now. An air impact wrench was worth its weight in gold for the job.

Was this dropping the pan completely out or just enough?

When I did my o-ring on my 5.3, I didn't have to drop the diff or steering rack. Just loosened the pan bolts and it dropped down enough to get the small oil pump bolt out.

on 2wd models does the rack have to drop down or is taking the steel ps line off enough? I just did the front seal and plan to do the pickup oring and deflector soon.. 08 5.3 190K
Don't flame me but while the pan is off can I shim the oil pump spring for a few more psi? if so what thickness shim? TIA

Dunno. I dropped the rack because it was a no brainer with a good impact wrench. Took 5 maybe 5 minutes and let it hang from the tie rods.

On the oil pump, I wouldn't shim that pressure spring.

Lurking... because my Chevy van has had low oil pressure for quite some time now. Tried different filters since I’ve read that can help ( ac delco, wix, fram) no change.

Just need to find a hill steep enough to test the theory. I already bought the gaskets but never got around to installing

Idk if we talked about this--I had to change the oil pump in my 05. The O ring was still soft and pliable--but this motor was severely neglected.20200114_190436.jpg 20200114_184153.jpg 20200114_190420.jpg 20200114_184000.jpg 20200114_190430.jpg
I put a high volume, now warm idle pressure is around 50 psi. From the low oil pressure, that eventually went to 0 it developed a tap. The tap slowly went away. As of now motor has 150,000 on it.

Is that engine still running? Yikes!
Yup. Funny-- I just told my gf something is going to give on it--motor or trans, that we're on borrowed time--not more then 1 min ago! Yup, still running and coming up on an oil change.
