2009 Denali XL dashlight help

Could use you all's expertise! In the daytime, the dashlights (back illumination of the gauge panel), are on and glow a faint blue. Everything seems to work as expected.

If it is dark outside, the dashlights do not come on at all, although all of the rest of the electronics seem to be fine (radio, digital readings, etc). The individual dome-light manual buttons also stop working.

The dealer already replaced the entire gauge cluster under warranty, and said that would fix it... but it didn't (and of course since I picked it up in the daytime, I couldn't test until that night).

Anyone ever seen this issue before or have any ideas? I told the dealer that my thought was it was the ambient light sensor or the dimmer switch (2 things that seem to go bad often), but they said it wasn't.
