Ok, this ought to settle it. The axle under the work bench is my spare 9.5" out of a 2011 Escalade. The axle on my driveway is the 8.6" from my Yukon XL.

These are Saginaw axles used on the GMT900 wagons and pickups. My pickups have the same 9.5" axles, just different brackets of course as they have a leaf spring rear suspension.

I'll have to take some pictures for you. You might want to look up the RPO code for the upper picture. That axle flange is a lot closer to the end of the tube than on any 9.5 I've worked on. (Which is why the repair bearings usually don't work on the 8.5 but they work on the 9.5)

I'll get a couple 9.5 axle tubes measured on Saturday.... Hard to tell with a photograph, but off the top of my head they look on the small side. I could be wrong though.

What in the world are you talking about???

My comments are based on the axles used on the GMT900 trucks and SUVs, nothing else. I showed you photos of both and you're still siding with google. The part numbers for the seals, bearings and tone rings are all the same, go look it up.

Well, rather than rely on "axles used on GMT 900 trucks and SUVs".... Which is a rather vague statement as there's a few different options available, there is no one size fits all. Actual measurements with a micrometer are necessary. When I did the axle bearings on the 2014 Escalade, the below bearing was too small for the axle tube. RockAuto did not differentiate between the 8.5 in 10 bolt and the 9.5 in 14 bolt rear end. I just assumed all escalades had the 14 bolt. Note the outside diameter on what turned out to be the axle bearing for the 8.5:

.... So ordered the correct AAM bearing kit, and it fit perfect. Note the outer diameter of the bearing on the 9.5:

That is actual part numbers with actual dimensions, from both timken and AAM, the latter of which uses koyo bearings.

There's even a late 2014 change in the available rear ends used.... If I remember correctly it's a 9.5 inch differential with a 12 bolt cover. Stumbled on that while looking over specs at the local dealer. I've never seen one though.

I will put on my chrometer on the outside diameter of the axle tube on Saturday for one more measurement out of curiosity.

But to say your basing it on axles used on the GMT 900 platform is like saying all GMT platforms have an LS engine so they all share the same parts... Which is far from accurate.

On a side note, both the 8.5 and the 9.5 inch rear ends have been around for a couple decades. They're having fact been various changes along the way. But the bottom line is that the 8.5 was originally designed for midsize cars, and GM never should have installed them in pickups and SUVs..... But they did.

It's not vague. It's being precise to not get into the forty plus years of different versions which is not germaine to this discussion.

These axles...

You're giving me a headache. You and that dude who wants tire pressure sensors that only work with letting air out of the tires!

Assuming you have the vehicle since new, and the axle is original, what is the RPO code?

Measure the outside diameter of your axle bearings. (The ones you removed obviously) Something tells me they're only 2.8"?
2.998" ..... Literally just a hair under 3 inches...is the diameter for the AAM 9.5 rear end with the 14 bolt cover. The 2.8" is the correct inside diameter of the axle tube for the smaller 8.5" rear end.

There you have it down to the thousandth of an inch.
