ABS pump and Module replacement 2001 Tahoe New or used

Hey Everyone,

So my ABS pump and module needs to be replaced and was curious to what everyone's thoughts are. Should I buy used or new. I find the module and pump from ebay used for around 300, and if I bought a new pump it is 330, and then the module rebuilt that comes with a lifetime warranty is 230. Was curious if anyone has had experience with this and what route they went. Also is there an upgrade I can do since I have to replace the whole unit.

Ok, so why do you say that it needs to be replaced? Usually only the module goes. Do not buy one, have yours rebuilt. Google ABS Module rebuild. I use the guys out of Moscow Idaho. They send it back with a life time guarantee. The pumps are pretty generic, and if you do this, you have to bleed the pump. Using the old foot pedal will NOT work. They have two channels. You will only bleed channel 1. You need a scan tool for channel 2. I got an Auto for like $250 bucks. Love it because not only will it bleed the ABS, it has a bleed feature on it for GM. As you probably know, you can't use an auto bleed system. This tool will allow you to do it. Also, This has apps for every car known to man. I use this to reset my Mercedes Flex service. A hell of a lot easier than going through all of the steps.

Hey sorry I though i was in the right thread. What thread should I have posted in?

The reason looking to get a new pump is the pump stays on which usually is the result of a bad module, but my mechanic hooked up a positive wire to the pump with out a ground wire and the pump started working. He said that the pump should not turn on since the module is what grounds the pump. So he said that the unit must of shorted and is getting a ground from the frame or brake lines when its not suppose to. Does that sound right? If i could avoid buying the pump that be awesome since its so much money. Hence why I was wondering if i should take the chance and buy a used pump for 70 bucks off eBay or a brand new for 380 off amazon.

Relay in abs module can go bad and cause a constant abs pump on. Happened to mine and I pulled the abs module, sent it to a guy on ebay and no more abs pump issues. Fixed for less than $70. U have random abs/brake lights come on too? I think ur mechanic is off base and about to waste ur money. Haven't seen anyone need to replace an abs pump.

It is true the old pedal bleeding method wont work on these brake systems BUT it is NOT true that you cant bleed them without a scanner that can do the the equivalent GM Tech 2 auto bleed feature. You can gravity bleed them. It takes alot of time but it can be done. Ive done it on both of my 2003 Tahoes. The last one had a brake line from the front brakes back to the ABS manifold pop a pin hole due to corrosion. I ended replacing all 4 calipers because of frozen bleeders. So the whole system was opened up ....and gravity bled successfully.

Can you explain this gravity bleed a little more? I actually have my abs pump out right now cause a screw was stripped on the module. So I had to remove the whole pump with it. To actually remove the stripped screw. 2002 Suburban 5.3L L59 LT RWD btw.

Have someone pump the brakes up like old school method and go around and bleed as normal. Then move the hoe in the driveway a few feet and lock the brakes up a couple times. Then bleed again old school. Wont hurt to lock em up again and bleed again. This moves air out of ABS system (pump, manifold, etc). Start again with farthest from the master cylinder and one caliper at a time. Crack the bleeder open just enough to get a little fluid and leave open for around an hour. Make sure master cylinder is always topped off during each caliper bleed. Once you finish up with all 4. You should have good pedal. If not, lock em up again and repeat. I locked them up twice after regular bleed then gravity bled every tire and thats all it took. I had all 4 calipers off and replaced. One line from front to ABS manifold replaced and it was all good to go.

Or see my other thread about the ****** clone GM Tech 2 which has the auto bleed feature that the dealership mechanics use when a vehicle is bled in the dealership service Dept. $240 or so and it does much more than just that! Itll pay for itself in less than a year easily.

I went through BBA Reman when my module went. They are fast and their price is fair. Haven't had any problems with my ABS since.

Thats why i was thinking of going the used route for the pump and do the module rebuild with module masters. How can you tell if the pumps bad and does that make sense what he said about the pump shorting out and self grounding it self? Would love to avoid the 350 for the pump but also would like to fix this problem
