Finally got it! I went to Advance Auto one more time and found a 1/2" brass plug. The threads lined up perfectly and I even confirmed with caliper.
I brought them back, put some thread sealant on them, topped off fluids, tightened with 7/8 SAE socket, and torqued to 35 ft lbs (not sure if that is even what GM calls for, but it felt right).
