Just out of curiosity, when you purchase a used vehicle from a reputable dealer and they tell you they got the car from auction, can you request the paperwork?? We purchased a used car last year with a clean car fax and just went to trade it in and it has two accidents from 3~ years prior and the dealership won’t do anything to help us and attorneys won’t take it as the cars “too old” (2013).... hopefully this won’t get me banned or in trouble as it’s not a Tahoe or Yukon. Thanks!!

I know. That was my mess up. But even if I did do the extensive searching, nothing would’ve came up. I have the original Carfax that shows no accidents. The accidents from 3~ years prior didn’t show up until 4 months after we purchased the car. The only thing that would’ve shown damage was an inspection. Which I’m kicking myself for not doing, but I figured Carfax was correct with everything, so why would I need to do that? Well now I know.

Nothing is better than an old school take your time inspection of anything used you're buying. People place too much faith and weight in CarFax reports. I could wrap my Denali around a tree, take it to a buddies shop, straighten the frame, throw some new fenders and doors on it, and guess what, clean CarFax.

Completely agree. We checked it out, but only looked for leaks. It doesn’t look like it’s been wrecked until you truly inspect it. The rad support looks like it’s been hammered in places and there’s overspray in the engine bay. But that’s it. There’s no drivability problems, just it’s not worth anything now. We’re gonna be paying 48k for a 13k car. I knew we were upside down as we traded in an upside down car on it, but not 25k upside down.

take it up with carfax, if they missed a accident from 3yrs prior that's on them, I thought they had some kind of guarantee that there reports are accurate? but there's probably some loop hole....

Their buyback guarantee is with salvaged titles. And thankfully the title is clear. I’ve emailed them but haven’t heard anything yet. Just waiting on that

When I was a boy my uncle taught me how to spot damage to cars, he was a body man and used to buy and sell a lot. Anyhow, like you said, there's nothing physcially wrong with your truck, just enjoy it and drive it and keep it. It could've been worse.

Yeah- they report to you what's been reported to the bureaus that they poll for the data. So if nothing was reported to the bureau(s), then Carfax has nothing to report to you. Carfax doesn't have some exclusive insider intel on a vehicle's history to which you're paying to gain access.

That’s what I’m worried about. But I read some where that there’s ways to block the accidents from showing up for a certain period. I don’t know how true that is or anything. We purchased the car (2013 Subaru STI) March 22, 2017. The accidents showed up July 26, 2017. But the accidents occurred 12/09/2013 and 03/18/2014. There were entries before, and after the accidents that appeared. I’m at loss right now.
