Im not sure yet on the handles I still haven't decide which way my truck is going to go. More street or more rugged look and that will determine the handles.
Also I just got done doing the esky handle. Before I say anything my phone died and I was using that as a camera so no mid install pics, which I will get to in a second. At first it looks like an easy mod. Shift into neutral, with the truck off of course. Put on the park brake. Remove the rubber boot around the shifter and remove one hex nut and the shifter slides out. This is where the easy part ends. At this point you need to disconnect the shifter wires from the wiring harness, which by the way is way the **** up under the dash. At first I leaned under the dash like a gymnast trying to see where it plugged in, finally saw it but couldnt reach for it and see it at the same time. So i started blind searching with my hand, don't lie we've all done it. And some how got it unhooked. Don't ask me how cause its a small ass clip and you really need a screw driver to do it. So i get that unhooked and remove the older shifter.
Shit.
The plugs on the shifters are not the same, of course I found this out after reattaching the new esky shifter to the mount and trying to plug it in blindly again. DOH! It wasn't working something wasnt right. I pulled it back out and examined the two plugs. They are straight up different sizes and use different sized pins so I couldn't just remove the wire pins and change them over to the new plug. The Tahoe uses big pins and the esky uses small ass ones, comparative to most esky owner's dick size. HA! Anyways back to the shift cable. I grew some balls and chopped off both the male plug on the esky shifter and the female plug on my trucks wiring harnessss! Geeez I was sweating balls when I did that. Brand new truck and im cutting up the wiring harness! Anyways I used some butt splice connectors.. These guys
Connected the wires together. I turned on the truck and for some reason the tow haul was already on and the button didnt turn it off. Guess I had the wires backwards. Flipped the wires and it works! I was happy. Crimped off the butt splices and tucked everything back in. Of course this was after I removed the lower dash piece because there was no way this was going to happen without removing it. If I had known and done that from the first place it would of been much easier. Now I know some of you are going to ask why didnt i chop off the old plug and splice it on my new shifter well one of the wires accidently ripped out of the pin hole and it was done at that point.
Overall this mod took me 2 hours. But now that I have done this mod it could easily be done in under and hour with my guidance. As far as the shifter buttons, I did not install those yet, although my truck did have the wiring for them, that task can wait for another day. I absolutely love the look and more so the feel of the leather instead of the hard black plastic. Can't wait to see it tomorrow in the sun.
Once my phone is back up I'll snap a pic.
