I like my Bilstein HD's, huge improvement over the stock Tenneco's. Never had Monroe, so I can't compare

Monroe Sensatrak's...

Just bought four of them and I can't even tell when I drive over washboard anymore...and I like the highway ride...

Never tried bilsteins before though....

Ok, after 8 months they ride like shit now. I can feel every bump, and I can kindof feel a bounce over manhole covers, potholes, etc. Instead of going up and down over bumps, they kind of do a high speed bounce. I have a steering stabilizer kit installed, so I don't feel anything in the wheel, but (don't laugh) I can feel it in the gas pedal! The gas pedal shakes under my foot when going over bumps! I just did 4 balljoints, 4 tierod ends, pitman arm, and idler arm, and wheel alignment last weekend thinking that it would help the bounce/shaking. See my addition to RavingMadman's writeup, http://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5066 but it didn't.

I'm looking to replace the front shocks again.

What about Rancho RS5000's? Why did not one person mention those? Are they a rough ride? Not worth the money? Not as good as these Bilsteins I keep hearing about?

I am looking for a soft ride on stock height. So I guess the the choices are RS5000 or Bilsteins. Which gives the softer ride? Looking for smooth as glass over washboard. I know, not gonna happen, but a man can dream can't he?

Sorry to revive an old thread, but after a few months, I'm just wondering what people's thoughts are now after they have had shocks on for a bit.

Hey, thanks for the info, quite timely.
I started a thread 'Mexican FIX' relative to this exact issue.
My research came down to Monroe's, either SensaTrac or Reflex. Too bad they didn't hold up for you, maybe a warranty issue?

I'm running 10ply 80lb tires with Bilsteins right now and it's a kidney belt ride even on smooth pavement. My Hoe was my primary tow vehicle until I replaced it with a Touareg V10TDI. I'm changing out the tires this week. Spec for the vehicle is P245/75R16, I've been advised to go slightly wider at P265 to get a higher sidewall resulting in slightly more cush. I'll probably go with this and see how the Bilsteins perform. If they don't, which I don't think they will for the ride I'm looking for, (which dovetails with what you're looking for) I'll go with the Monroe Reflex as they claim "improved stability with reduced harshness". The SensaTrac claim "smooth ride with good control". They both sound good but the technology of the Reflex appears the most advanced to deal with the driving conditions I'll be dealing with.

My experience with the Bilsteins is that unless they are under a good load, they're stiff as hell. The Rancho's, I think the 5000 is the same as the 9000 but the 9000 is adjustable. Rancho's web site shows a graph of sorts indicating that the 9000 starts at OEM spec and gets stiffer with adjustment. At least that's how I read it. So I'd conclude that the Rancho's are gonna be similar to the Bilsteins.
Again, thanks for your post, it helps confirm what I'm trying to achieve.

bilsteins hands down...but if your lowered which i think you are then dont get them...i had them on my 92 pickup with a two four drop and bottomed out bigtime. front were good to go but back was terrible..before the drop..the shocks were badass. doetsch shocks...in my opinion are best drop shock.

I have the Rancho RS5000 all the way around my truck and I have no complaints. I've had them on for right around 2 years and so far they have held up excellent. The ride isn't too stiff or too soft, I would call it a happy medium. They have good highway manners and in the city they ain't too bad either.

I've never driven on Monroe's so I cannot compare the two.
