I have a 2004 Suburban 1500 that I love, but it has always stopped like donkey. The brakes are phenomenally inadequate and I’m considering an upgrade to better (probably 4 piston) brakes, front and rear. I’ve always hated not being able to stop as quickly as I want. Does anyone have suggestions for something affordable?

Thx

The easiest thing to do is put calipers and rotors on from an NNBS and SS hoses instead of the rubber.

you can do a 07 front brake rotor and caliper swap, its a dual piston. so is what you have, only the 07 stuff is larger. iirc you need at least 17"wheels to do the swap.

i came close to doing the upgrade, but just went with R1 concepts all around and it stops like a champ. dont see the point really. you already have a dual piston caliper, the 07 rotors is a bit larger is all.

best part is they are about 200 shipped for all 4 corners on ebay. i used the E line drilled and slotted with their ceramic scorched pads. they will be the best brakes you ever owned hands down, better then when it was new even.

this is not the first car/truck ive used r1 on. im a repeat customer. they are all im buying. replacement pads are below avg cost too. its a win win all around.

the bed in process is somewhat ugly, but just do as they say and you'll be happy.

I poked around R1's site to see what they offer. It looks like (outside of their big brake kits) their calipers are 2 piston. Obviously it's hard to make a judgement just from looking on a website, but I'm a skeptical that performance would really be that much different. I'm not a brake expert, but without upping the rotor size or piston count, I dunno. Please prove me wrong!

That's why you get the calipers from rock auto for the NNBS and the R1 rotors. They are an inch bigger than what you have now. You do need at least 17" wheels to clear them.

If you want your brakes to perform consider a hydroboost conversion. This will let your power steering pump provide brake pressure versus vacuum pressure from the engine. The brake feel is a lot more linear meaning the harder you push the pedal the more pressure applied. I never really like my brakes with vacuum pressure and had a nice scare with them. I'm doing the NNBS brake upgrade with drilled/slotted R1 Carbon geomet rotors, ceramic pads and SS lines this weekend. It should stop like a nobodies business afterwards. The next step would be a big brake kit and I don't want $700 rotors if I can avoid them.

There are lesser options than what I'm doing but the hydroboost will make even your current brakes feel better.

Right on. That sounds like a great idea. Since I just replaced my brake pads, I'll probably try that first (also because it better addresses the root of the problem being that it's currently a vacuum system). Then if I'm not totally satisfied, I'll look into the NNBS swap. I guess now the question is which hydroboost... any suggestions (OEM swap from dift GM model, or aftermarket)?

Thanks for the input, everyone!

Yeah the hydroboost may be what u need since u got new pads. 05-06 Tahoes and Yukons came from the factory with hydroboost. You need the hydroboost pedal but u don't want the adjustable brake pedal. I think mine was from a GM van. I bought my setup from a guy on performancetrucks.net
