Hi,

so i bought a used STS 2009 Key Fob from Ebay that have 5 buttons (Lock, Unlock, Remote Start, Panic, Trunk), and i was super excited to try it, but when i tried it on my LT Tahoe 2009, i was depressed that it didn't work at all.

My Question is: which key fob that fits my LT Tahoe the most?

is it a 5 button cadillac key fob or the Esky ones? (please put a link if you bought from a certain seller)

Photos for the STS key fob that i bought:

how do we know if we have remote start or not, and does it matter if the fob has the button for it or not if your tahoe does or does not have remote start? if any of that makes sense.

I recently bought my Tahoe and it only came with one key.

the RPO for remote start is AP3 and for remote start prep is AP8. You can look for those codes on the sticker on the inside of your glove box. Or you could get a copy of the build sheet for your Tahoe from a dealership.

If you have the AP8 RPo and want remote start enabled, you need to buy the update and have the dealer update your vin and enable remote start. The kit is ~150ish and the dealer charges 1-2 hours (I can't remember the exact number for labor). I do remember that it is comparable to an aftermarket install. I was recommended to stick with the factory security and remote start for my suburban (came with AP8).

As far as which key fob, it won't mater which you go with. If the fob you get has more options than your Tahoe, then you will just have buttons that do not do anything. If you look around you might be able to find a fob from someone that upgraded to the remote start option who is selling their old fobs.

So mine says AP8 so that sucks. I have access to a computer that runs full diagnostics and everything so im hoping that computer can program this system if i can get the kit. Any info on that would be great.

Also where would I be able to get that kit and what all goes with it for the install?

Thanks for the help.

I believe you would need a j2534-1 pass through interface and a subscription to acdelco tis2web to program. Not exactly cheap, might be easier to find a shop with this ability.

Alright. When your vehicle is programmed by a tech at the dealership, they pull your VIN and the programming is matched with the options associated with that VIN. This makes reprogramming the various modules relatively efficient.

The remote start retrofit includes a code that is used to update your VIN in GM's database. This allows the tech to pull the necessary software to reprogram your ride.

It is possible that you could enable this feature with an aftermarket tool. I would bet against that being the case. When this feature is installed at a dealership, it is my understanding that new programming is actually installed in the vehicle and that this programming is what enables the remote start. If your tool can program the BCM and the PCM, then you stand a chance.

Personally, I am not sold on how great this will be in a non-auto AC ride. In the LTZ Tahoe it was great because I got heated seats and heat in the winter and max ac in the summer. With manual AC, I will get whatever I happened to leave the AC set at. In a previous vehicle, manual ac with remote start was meh at best.

uhmmm it sounds like this will have to done by the dealer from what all has been said here and then other readings. Other reading I have found that dealers pay a type of fee each year to be able to change the VIN code on a vehicle or also the build sheet request. It seem that only the dealers have access to this type of subscription and not all dealers will be a member of or even know if they have the access to it till they call the number that would be specified on the install sheet for this type of equipment.

I have found one other after market kit that its a bit pricey but sounds like it may be cheaper than getting the $150 kit and paying a dealer to install and then reprogram and request for the build sheet change of my vehicle. This other aftermarket kit also utilizes your factory key fob which is great because I just ordered factory style key fobs with the auto start button already on it. I will most likely go with the aftermarket kit. It states its plug and play and I found a uTube vid that explains it pretty good and shows just how basic it is. A couple things look a little sketch to me but it seems legit. I will for sure explore other options but, my winter season is almost over and I feel that the snow/ice season is for sure over. I will for sure be adding this feature by next winter bc the temps around here get below freezing and just the auto starts makes my mornings 10x easier with kids and what not when trying to make it to work on time.

Thanks for all the help. Couldn't have done it without yall.
