Hey guys, I just bought my wife a 2007 LTZ about 3 weeks ago. It has 76,000 miles on it and is in very good condition. However, at slow speeds like turning in a parking lot, you can hear a clunking sound coming from the steering column. It sounds just like my 2001 Suburban did before I had to grease the intermediate shaft. I know the 2007 has a different shaft that can't be greased. If I open the hood and pull on the intermediate shaft it has a good deal of play in it. Has anyone else had an issue with this? I have searched everywhere before asking and I can find a bunch of info on the 2000-2006 with this issue, but not with the 2007+.

Just a thought but have you checked the ball joints? Also I'm from Vernon originally but live in Birmingham now. Big game Friday. Roll Tide!

No, I haven't really had a chance to look into it much, but I will check out the ball joints too. I live in Winfield and work in Birmingham. Make the drive every day. My parents are from Sulligent. I'm worried about the outcome Saturday. Roll tide!

I had the same sound in my 04 LT, It didn't happen all the time and the volume of clunk wasn't consistent.

I changed the center link, tie rods, rod ends, pitman arm, idler arm only to find the same problem. I thought it could have been in the steering gearbox but I never looked into the steering column.

Sold the 04 last week and my 08 is super quiet. :)

I fixed it. It may be temporary but it is super quiet now. I had read that the 07 didn't have the greasable intermediate shaft but mine does. I unbolted it under the hood and worked it in a back and forth motion (get your minds out of the gutter) to redistribute the grease. If it starts rattling again I am going to purchase the new updated intermediate shaft.

I have the same problem in my 2008 LT and it feels like the tyres are going to break, it is so hard and disturbing that it annoys me.

Is there any solution to that ?

Should I go with changing the Steering shaft? (if yes, any recommendations?)

After a couple of months my temporary fix is still working. Popping noise from the intermediate shaft is still gone after working the shaft back and forth.

My 07 Impala SS (and it seems like a bunch other Impalas) have probelms with the ISS or intermediate steering shaft. Does it make noise when you just move the steering wheel while sitting still?
