this morning, I had my Tahoe in 4x4 just to get out of my parking space. then as soon as I was approaching clear pavement, hit the button to go back into 2wd. I cant be 100% certain it was the truck disengaging, but I got a crunch noise from the front drivers side. if there is some 4x4 service I should be looking into, id like to stay ahead of any repair. there is the possibility it was just frozen ice/snow I was crunching over. the truck performed flawlessly in this last storm, engages and disengages in seconds with no issue. but is there things I could be servicing other than the usual grease fiings etc?

Were you moving when you hit the button? From what i understand you must be in neutral and stopped while changing from two to four wheel drive and vice versa.

I don`t know if that changed for 05 but if i`m in gear the t case will not shift and i`ve never tried it while moving so maybe that caused the noise.

I was moving I would have to do some more looking. but I haven't had a truck since 80s models that needed a dead stop and couldn't engage on the fly. I went in and out of 4 wheel drive a few times yesterday, and it didn't happen again. so im thinking it was crushing ice maybe. but ill have to do some research on the engaging at a top or not.

I think this is only the case if you're going in/out of 4 low.

I'm guessing it was crunching ice, especially if you've been unable to duplicate the problem.

Ice, agreed. It scared the piss out of me. Last thing I need is a busted axle in 4 degree weather. I did look, low 4x4 I the only one that requires full stop.
