Hey guys new to the forum. I have been doing a lot of reading on here and have a question. I just bought a 2008 Tahoe LTZ with 193K miles on it. The truck is in incredible shape in and out. It runs like new. I bought it from the second owner whos wife put the last 110K miles on it. The motor runs perfect and uses very minimal oil. (took a 2800 mile trip and used basically no oil) My question is, do I disable the AFM or just leave it be?

Thanks!

@Sublime69 If you think the reliability of the truck is not compromised with the AFM, then you'd probably want to check out the drive-ability. See if the AFM switching from 4/8 cylinders in your daily commute bothers you.

Honestly, I dont even notice it. Other then seeing the "V4" I cant even tell its happening.

That's good to hear, if you're still intrigued in disabling the AFM for a reasonable price try to find a gently used Range AFM device on Kijiji, Craigslist, eBay, etc.

Ok, I guess my other question would be, could disabling it cause issues to arise? Like the saying goes, "If it isn't broke, don't fix it".

Highly unlikely as the Range AFM modules interface via the truck's OBD-II port and just keep all 8 cylinders running at all times. It's a software method.

Sounds identical to mine: '08 LTZ, 192K (bought with 146K), bought from second owner, incredible shape, runs like new, uses minimal oil...

I disabled my AFM maybe 10-15K miles ago and noticed a reduction of oil in the catch can. Also, it has caught more oil since adding a stainless scrubber pad to it.

I say to have it disabled and even tuned if you want more power and/or better transmission shifting. depending on your driving and tuner, you may get better MPG with it tuned and AFM disabled. Even if you lose MPG, it won't be much at all. Possibly extending the life of your motor is more valuable than the pennies in gas you may be saving with AFM.

I have an 09 5.3 6 speed that is new to me with 150k. It was using a qt per 1000 miles. Tuned it and disabled the afm, added 30 hp, and get over 20mpg highway consistently.
Just saying...

No more oil consumption in 10k oil change with Amsoils best.

I just got a used disabler off Amazon for mine and I ain't looking back. Much better pleasure to drive. I have 304K on my Tahoe so you really noticed the AFM kicking in and out.
