Thinking of replacing the door speakers (04 Z71 bose speakers). Found some 2 ohm JBL gto628's, wondering if theyll sound any better/louder than the stockers. Im using a kenwood ddx372bt receiver. The bose speakers seemed to wake up a bit when i changed out the head unit, but im still looking for more. Is a simple speaker swap gonna be worth it? Or should i wait and save for a nice 4 channel amp?

I put the jbl gto 6.5 and 6x9 in my uncles single cab with an amp and stock radio. They really blew me away, I wasn't expecting it to sound that good for as cheap as they are. Don't remember if the stock bose speakers are 2 ohm or not. If they are 4 ohm then putting those 2 ohm jbls with fry the stock amp pretty quick. I would recommend a cheap amp to run them though.

Its never a bad idea to replace stock speakers. From what I have read is the Bose systems in these GMs are mostly just the amp that is different when comparing to aftermarket systems. The speakers are basically paper and will eventually give out faster than the poly or plastic made aftermarket speakers, you have to remember that these trucks were built on a mass scale and saving money is how they make money. I'm not sure on the specs for the Bose system speakers when it comes to ohms. Like stated above I would not say they would be above 2 ohm and the amp will be specifically for those. I would also bypass the stock amp and go with a good set of speakers. But you get what you paid for when it comes to speakers. Make sure you research and if your going for upgrading then look to spend a good 150+ a pair also depending on if you go with a component set or 2-3 way set. Components are usually more.

I read somewhere as well that there is a wiring harness kit for your aftermarket head unit that will bypass the amp and so then you will be using the "amp" in the head unit. All aftermarket head unit have specs that you can look up and see what wattage you want to stay around. Even then your ok to go over or below that. As long as your not running some crazy competition speakers with your BestBuy head unit and no amp.

Best is always to add an aftermarket amp like stated above. Take your time and do the research to match the amp to speakers you want. Even if you don't have all the funds to do a complete system ATT then do the research and buy speakers first then amp and amp kit later. Good luck, hope this helps and have fun.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I read on here that the bose speakers were 2 ohm and thats why i was looking at 2 ohm speakers for replacements. I guess ill hold off on door speakers for a while. Id really like to throw some nice components in a q-forms kick panel and just power them seperately anyhow.

For what its worth, the kenwood headunit is rated at 22watts rms.

My problem is that i recently added a 12" sub and its basically overpowering the rest of the system. (Alpine type s, powered by a rf prime 500x1, ported box) It sounds really good with the base knob one or two clicks from off, i just need to play catch up with some qaulity mids and highs to balance out everything i guess.

Again, thanks for the replies.

To get the most midrange and mid end out of the speakers that size (I'm talking 500hz to 1000hz) you really need an amp behind them. In my 2 door tahoe I have 2 6x9 in the rear roof and 6.5 components in the doors. I put a 60x 4 amp to them and my sub is almost not necessary. It gives the nice little kick (100hz crossover at 12db/octave slope) but the amp makes all the difference in the world. And it will help you tremendously with your staging (controlling levels). Just my 2 cents that's not worth 2 cents.

Agree, 100%. Iv installed a kit like this bc my friend wanted to spend less, save his trunk space and still have base, mid, highs. I did 2 6x9s and 4 doors speakers with 2 small amps and turned out sounding really good. It was not a ton of base by no means but I compared it to the stock Mach1 systems in the new body style mustangs at the time (2009). It was crisp clean base, mids, highs and all controlled easily through his head unit.

Well if the stock is indeed 2 ohm then go ahead and get those jbl speakers and run them off the stock amp until you can buy an aftermarket amp. They will honestly surprise you.

yes they are 2ohm in most bose set ups just check to make sure yours are correct before swapping. if you put a 4ohm speaker on a 2ohm amp it will cut the power in half and sound like crap!

Thanks for the info on the JBL GTO628's. I just ordered 4 of them to replace my Bose door speakers. Like you, Joe, I wanted just a bit more. I replaced my head unit with a Sony DD and then my bass with a JL 10" in an MTX Thunderform enclosure with a Soundstream amp. The rest of the Bose speakers are pretty good but I didn't think there were decent 2 ohm speakers available. I'll post my opinion when I get them installed.
