The catalytic convertors can also affect idle if they clog up and release. Like the potato in the exhaust pipe effect! (I messed with a friend of mine by crouching behind his cherry 57 Chev and intermittently holding a potato over one of his dual pipes while he was sitting in his car and trying to hit on my girlfriend-it seemed fair to me and I never told him what was wrong with his car!)
