I have a 95 Tahoe and have always had an erratic gas guage for aslong as I've had it (had it since last july) it bounces all of the place, sometimes it stays still most of the time it doesn't, if im on level ground and put the key in the on postion it goes to the correct reading but once it starts up it acts up, in the last month or so the fuel pump went, so new pump and sending unit, and I don't have the bill near by but I think the sending unit for the guage was done too, and the guy at the shop said either the guage wiring is bad or the guage is shot, any other things it could be? and to replace the guage you gotta replace the whole cluster? cause if thats what u gotta do ill prolly just leave it....thanks for the help

:wtf: Why are gas gauges sunddenly screwing up for people here?

Seriously, perhaps this might apply to you and several others:

Date: September, 1997
Subject:
Excessive Fuel Gauge Fluctuation
(Install Fuel Level Damper Kit)

Some owners may comment about excessive fuel gauge needle fluctuation when making turns or braking with less than a half tank of fuel.

It seems to be a pretty common problem this "hummingbird effect".
I believe your problem is with the stepper motor in the gauge that is going bad.
This has been going on with mine forever. One day I'll replace it, I have a list of other things that need to be replaced, this is not very high on my list, hah.

No tsb or reecalls on 9'95 exhuast manifolds.

There are replacemnts parts but you might have to talk to a instrument cluster specialist to get one. I can't seem to find and part number for it.

Hmm, not quite sure. I'll have to get back to you on that.
I had started a thread on another forum a while back about this. I'll go pop on over and ask the same question.

I have heard the parts are hard to come by but, just not sure what exactly is to be replaced.

EDIT : Only the stepper motor needs to be replaced but if you dont want to dig into the cluster then just replace the whole cluster
