LOOKING FOR SOME HELP ON A FUEL FLOODING ISSUE.
2009 ESCALADE 6.2 AWD - 240K
WAS SHOWING LARGE EMISSIONS LEAK CODE P0455 AND FLOODED ON COLD START. WITH MILAGE I FIGURED DOING ALL NEW PARTS ANYWAY - OEM
GOT NEW CAP, NEW PURGE VALVE, NEW SOLENOID, NEW CHARCOAL CANISTER
NO CODES, STILL FLOODED TO POINT WHERE IT DIES ON FIRST START UP. SECOND START UP IT WILL STUMBLE BUT MANAGE TO STAY ON AND CORRECT ITSELF. HAVEN'T CHECKED PLUGS YET. RUNS NORMAL AFTER 2ND START UP.

ANY IDEAS?

Have you tried a start with the purge line open to atmosphere and not connected to the tank? I've seen new solenoids bad but of the box (usually not OEM). Or, remove the solenoid and try to blow through it with no power attached to it. If there's any flow whatsoever, then that could be contributing to a rich condition.

Also, have you ever done intake manifold gaskets? How about the map sensor, MAF sensor, etc?

Check for any vacuum leaks between the MAF & the front O2 sensors.
Any leaks usually cause a false lean condition, which the ecm 'corrects' by adding too much fuel.

other thing to check is the alcohol % reading. as the o2 sensors drift sometimes the ecm thinks you're running e85 when you're on gas and it runs crazy rich.

I HAVEN'T TRIED START UP WITH PURGE LINE OPEN, BUT I AM ON THIRD PURGE VALVE, FIRST 2 WERE DORMAN, 3RD OEM...SAME WITH SOLENOID, FIRST 2.DORMAN, MOST RECENT OEM. I HAVE DONE INTAKE ALONG WITH PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ELSE UNDER HOOD...I HAVE NOT DONE
OR CHECKED MAP OR MAF SENSORS...PROBABLY ONLY THING I HAVEN'T TOUCHED.

WHAT WOULD I CHECK, INTAKE TUBE, INTAKE GASKETS, (RECENTLY NEW)?...

BASED ON MY SCANNER, EVERYTHING LOOKED FINE WHEN I WAS READING IT ON START UP...DIDN'T SHOW ANYTHING THAT STARTED GOING DOWN, FUEL PSI, ETC...THEN SHUTS DOWN SLOWLY...WILL FIRE UP IF I PRESS PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN BUT SMELL OF RAW FUEL AND SMOKE TILL IT IDLES...

alcohol precent isn't shown in all scanners. and you'll have to look for it specifically.

caps aren't necessarily. we can read lower case too.

^^^ THIS would be good to verify to at least rule it out; there was a firmware update to some of these PCMs to rectify a mis-calculated alcohol level. If you're not running E85 or anything over E15, the alcohol value should track the actual within a few percentage points and be below 15%.

Post up your MAF reading in g/sec at hot idle. It should be very close to the engine displacement in liters.
Post up the short- and long-term fuel trims, both banks. Does the fuel system go into closed loop?
You can test for vacuum leaks by using unlit propane around your intake tube as well as any vacuum lines or the intake itself.

If the fuel trims are very positive and have been for a while, there may be fuel contamination in the oil, and the trims are going to struggle to right themselves without changing the oil. But that's a bit of an WAG without having more info.

You could have bad O2 sensors or a leaky injector, etc., but without some of these data it's going to be challenging to pinpoint it.
