Is this normal wear for 72k? Never been changed before..

i wouldn't worry about it. Ive done mine @ 70k and both front and rear were like that. I do trans and rear diff services on Honda and a lot of the time, they look like that.

I would have been happy if mine looked like that at 83K miles.

What I did was clean the plug and put it back in several more times before I grabbed a magnetic pick up and used that instead. I probably pulled out a dozen more clumps that looked like that. Then I put some gear lube in and some more material ran out.
