Fuel Pump Whine

Have had the whine for a number of years on my '00 LT 5.3L. Of course, the dealer has always maintained that this is "normal". And after reading about all the folks who have this same problem, I guess it is.

Read someone's post to try Lucas Fuel Treatment.

Not a big believer in snake oil type additives, but what the hell, it's cheap.

Bought the 32 oz size ($9.99 at AutoZone, Wal Mart and other places) and put a heavy dose of about 12 - 14 ozs in. 3 oz per 10 gal is recommended, but they say you can't "overdose" this stuff.

After about 1/4 tank, it had stopped whining.

Still can't believe it actually helped, but it did.

Amazingly, you can get a GALLON of this stuff for about $21 from Amazon.

Thought I'd pass this experience on to those who have tried all else and failed to stop the noise.

Thanks for the info. Replaced my fuel pump about 2.5 years ago and it has always whined. New one and old. Whines on my Sierra 3500 too. I have been noticing recently that it has gotten considerably louder on my Yukon... May try the Lucas treatment.

I think I'll give this a shot. Thanks for sharing this. I've been to broke/cheap to replace the fuel pump/sender but for $10 it can't hurt to try it.

4 days now, and the whine has not come back.

The other point I forgot to mention -

Advice was to keep the tank about 1/2 full all the time, keeps the pump covered in the tank with gas. Well, I used to do that, and the whine would ususally not start until it got below 1/2. It just recently started whining at the "full" level, and I thougth that was it, new pump time, so I tried the Lucas. BTW, the pump has "whined" for at least 5 years or so, but kept on working OK.

Will now let it run down under 1/2 and see if it does start whining again.

Will give you guys an update down the road.
