The new design allows for better ventilation and slows the oil usage. There are lots of threads with very in depth explanations. Heck, just google it and read what comes up. If you have the oil usage the valve cover new design is what a dealer will do to it and whether they charge you depends on how much you push them. But it is not a hard fix. Again, read the threads. Do a search.

Only in my second tank of fuel, since I bought it. I guess I can check the tb/intake to see how it looks.

I think there was even an older version of the valve cover/pcv system but I don't know what years it covered. I thought I read that on here or at another forum.

So how does eliminating the V4 mode improve mileage? My truck reads noticeably better when in V4 mode.

These vehicles are Heavy , when in V4 mode they lug down and the engine has to work harder to maintain the speed , when in V8 mode the engine works less there for requiring less fuel , just remember the V4-V8 is just a way to beat EPA standards by saying its a V4 half the time and also a marketing tactic .

Since installing my range module my mileage is consistently better and drivability has improved , no more shaking , jerkiness , rough idle .

To some up your question it all comes down to power to weight ratios

I turned off the DoD and replaced the valve cover. Been 6k miles (2 oil changes) and almost no oil loss.
