I need help with 2002 z71 tahoe 5.3 4x4

Needs to be put on a lift and ran through gears with and without 4wd to see whats making noise.

Any advice to a way to do that without an actual lift? Or at least some security measures I should follow?

Basically, that’s what you need. If you have a set of jack stands, put those under the front and then put your jack under the rear axle. Better yet, if you can afford it, invest in another set of jack stands or see if a friend has a set you can borrow.

Just make sure that you are safe about and no one gets under, behind or in front of your vehicle while you are engaging the different positions of the transfer case.

So it runs all gears for about 5 seconds or until I reach 20 mph in 2wd and 4 hi and low

Check transmission fluid level. Drain some Tcase fluid and look for glitter and check the magnet of the tranny and the Tcase for chunks. You will need to drop tranny pan to check the magnet.
