That was probably a recruiter or DOD vehicle. When you go above and beyond in armed forces and they don’t want to lose you, the perks rain down.

Someone probably finished out the tail end of their 20 or 30 year career in that vehicle. Great find and a really cool piece of history.

It’d be kinda cool to place a very small shield on the back to pay homage.

Whatever it was used for, it was stationed at Vandenburg AFB in SoCal. In the navigation system there are numerous other AF base addresses. Car Fax says it was serviced a time or two at the dealer in Lompoc, CA. It has a good, firm shift - perhaps like a locking torque converter. I hope that is a good sign........

You got a cream puff. That would be Vandenburg Space Force Base now. That thing may have never seen an unpaved road.

Thank you
Your discovery of previous GPS locations clinched it for me -- the vehicle was probably used for driving USAF personnel from point to point. Andrews AFB in our area had a number of GM SUVs painted in dark navy non-metallic. with small yellow USAF lettering on the doors and back gate. Kerr may have flashed the emissions module or some other drive-related parameters, and/or added something as simple as a radio harness (like a run of coax) for base-mobile communications. Even with no grommeted hole in the center of the roof, they also used some less-intrusive mounts on an "L" bracket between the passenger fender and back corner of the hood. In our area, Andrews, the Pentagon, various Washington DC sites, and up toward Baltimore all involved shuttling USAF brass around. Cheaper than helicopters, and lately, perhaps more safely. :(
