Is throttle body reprogramming necessary?

I have been having problems with my vehicle starting for a long time and was forced to take it to the dealer after my mechanic couldn't figure anything out. The dealer said I need a new throttle body and to reprogram the computer as well. The quote for the part is $325.63 and the labor was quoted at $350. I am wondering if this is necessary? I did push on the butterfly valve when I was trying to clean it and now realize that was not a good move. Here is the video of the problem.

Did you try to clean the tb with the battery connected and the tb plugged in? Also what did you clean it with, the newer electronic tb should only be cleaned with maf style cleaner.

There's probably a problem with the throttle position sensor, not sure why they would want to replace whole throttle body.

I left the battery connected. I wasn't aware that I should not touch the valve and pushed it open 2 times. I used alcohol and shop rags to do the cleaning.

The alcohol probably ruined one of the sensors and you should always disconnect your battery when your working around electronic parts even if you are using an electronics safe cleaner. They probably want to replace the whole tb because yours has the electronic throttle body and the reprogramming is sometimes necessary when that is replaced. It's actually just resetting the ecm so it knows the home position of the throttle plate.

There is usually no need for reprograming--it will self-learn the new butterfly setting. Just drive it around for a while and all should sort itself out and will return to the normal idle speed.

This is true...did it with mine.

They sell a new sensor kit for the TB to fix the problem

Just my two cents but if you're absolutely positive you need a new TB buy the AC Delco part online at Amazon. It's the EXACT same part as the one the dealer has. It's half as much. I did it myself. It's only 4 bolts once you remove the air intake which is only loosening those two metal rings. It's not hard at all, takes 10 minutes. Just unplug the TB plug, the MAF plug and pull that pcv recirculation hose out of the top of the intake manifold. Boom. Also I've never heard of anyone who actually needed to have the throttle body relearn at the dealer. I've moved the butterfly valve as well as installed the new TB and both times relearned within three minutes after letting the engine idle. That's what the PCM does. Good luck
