DAY 5: Couldnt resist to give frame its final inspection before I start re-fab.

Well,well,well... Had a few things to take off before I get my fabrication list together. You really wanna do that just in case.
Took the motor mount pads off. Since It will be a SBC sitting in this spot,no need for them.

This God awful hook that was just welded anywhere, but yet, lets cut the frame horns down and weld C-channel to it as a make-shift bumper.

5 inches of sludge in the tranny mount area... AKA rust maker.PB214662_zps7b4233e3.jpgPB214663_zps52ab87d3.jpg
This guy must of had stock in C-channel.PB214664_zps890a23a1.jpg
AND THEN....he welds it to the frame instead of bolting it on..PB214665_zpse59697f9.jpgPB214668_zpsa9bb2397.jpg
Grind,cut, bang,pry...grind,cut,bang,pry

Got the C-channel off and years of built up rust and solid sand. Their are two bolts in there....Can you see them????PB214671_zpse367643f.jpgPB214672_zps34c47e60.jpg
LOOK, how swollen the shaft of the bolt is. Never seen a frame this bad!

Nothing left of the front frame horns...There goes my reference points.

Maybe I can collect so money back on scrap,to put into restoring this beast!

RUST,RUST and look... a rabbit hole..
PB214678_zps67fe7812.jpgPB214679_zps553a8f1a.jpg
Here is how much rust came out of that hole. look really close and you can see where I just poked my screwdriver right through and rust is just falling into the pail.

Nasty! to say the least. My goal for my week of vacation was to have it torn down to the frame and I did. I will be ordering bulk sheets of 4'x6'x1/4'' to make all my filler plates and new weld in sections. I will make new shock mounts(because those will change with the 7'' lift) out of all 1/4'' also. Ive got te rest of the weekend off and then I will be in the semi for 2 days and then back in the shop for 5 days. Itll be "FRAME RESTO R US"!:Bye:

Wow that IS bad. I would have never guessed! It's good you planned on restoring this or your be driving a huge pos and not even know it really. You may be better off just fanning up a new frame

Nice work, buddy :)

Oh yea. As i ripped and grinded, pounded and swore. It was raining rust flakes. LOL! It gonna be a challenge, but nothing I am not use to. I think im gonna buy a plasma cutter after thanksgiving. My company is having a big sale on welding equipment in December. I might, idk though... we will see. Thanks bud----------dy[emoji106]

Day6: Daughter say,"dad, lets get to grinding"!

It was a nice 28* today so we rolled the frame outside to get it down to bare metal. What I do is, Rough it with a high rpm grinding stone, wire wheel it and then polish with a flapper disc. This gets the metal real,"pure'' so when I start scabbing and welding I dont have to worry about "slag back".
Then after the week of grinding. I will pound the frame with a metal pick to measure the strenght and density and go from there....

Best thing about having 4 kids. They are not afraid to work. My daughter told me to sit down and take notes.....so I did!
