Well the maiden voyage of the new radiator happened tonight.

On a 20 mile ride, running 55 - 60 mph without any real stop and go traffic with the A/C off (so the cooling fans were off) the temperature stayed at 172°- 174° as seen by the OBD2 data. Ambient temperature was 70°- 71° according to the mirror.

This is right at 20° cooler than what the truck has always ran in the past.

Now I need to figure out at what temperature it goes into Closed loop mode. As long as the truck is in closed loop mode I won't worry about it.
are you talking transmission temp? nevermind I guess not, I just never understood how any size radiator would make any difference on the coolant temp since the thermostat controls that and only opens at a set temperature. a bigger radiator or even a swimming pool wouldn't make the thermostat open any sooner.

The LS engine has kind of a strange cooling setup. The surge tank dumps in behind the thermostat. The surge tank receives coolant from the top port on the passenger side (cold side) of the radiator.

If the radiator is cooling better than the old one and there is enough flow through to the surge tank then it can cool the engine to the point where the thermostat will stay closed, or re-close I suppose, because the cooler coolant is bypassing the thermostat and cooling the engine.

I'm not sure if the new radiator is cooling more efficiently or if the port to the surge tank just has less of a restriction in it but either way the truck ran 20° cooler last night and the only difference is the new radiator.

I thought it wasn’t good to have your engine running cooler, that’s been discussed in the threads regarding cooler thermostats. Supposedly there’s a reason our engines run the temp that they do. I can’t remember why...I’m getting old I guess. :crazy:

So this evening I rode into town with my wife and some friends to get some dinner.

This time I had the air conditioner running and it was more stop and go traffic going up into town.

Ambient temperature was around 75°.

The truck appears to be running at its "normal" temperature... 192°-194°.

So I'm guessing having the heat from the condenser in front of the radiator, combined with the stop and go from traffic lights made the difference.

That wasn't my intent. I don't have any formal education beyond 9th grade and my "training" is accumulated from a lifetime of ****-ups and, eventually, internet research.

I honestly do have issues with retaining knowledge applicable anywhere else in life other than the garage. Two track mind: **** mounds and motors.

Also, I honestly do geek out on your oil filtration system and UOA results. Like I said- simple pleasures for simple minds.

Thermostat's aren't a precision instrument. lol

Even with the same ratings, it's common for them to open and close at temperatures 10 degrees (maybe more?) different from each other. Beyond that, some open or close more or less at a given temperature. The "balance" in a system can easily be altered by changing the largest component. A 20 degree difference is a bit much, though.

The other (and possibly the sole contributing) factor here is the surge tank style of system we have, as Ken outlined. Some people have issues with the engine not warming up quickly enough and throwing codes. I doubt this would be a problem on most days in Florida.

I was just giving you a hard time buddy. I appreciate the fact that someone gets something out of my limited mods.... and folly... lol

So today, another 20 mile trip with A/C off, ambient temperature about 70°, less stop and go traffic and red lights... truck stayed about 20° cooler at 172°- 174°.

Any of you guys with access to the OBD2 data stream interested in checking to see what your temperature is while running the A/C and then again without the A/C running, while up to operating temperature???

I am just curious to see if there is a difference with your truck as well.

I never thought to see what temperature my truck ran without the A/C on, while cruising, before swapping radiators. Didn't really think there would be a difference.
