For all my trucks I've used a hitch-safe to stow the key\fob. This works great.

Not currently owning a GM product (2016 Z71 on order) - will locking the truck with the fob and stowing it in the hitch-safe not work? Can you lock the fob in the truck using a valet key, which you can then put it he hitch-safe, and use it to open the truck door. On some cars\trucks this activates the alarm until you hit the key fob "unlock", but it works.

On my Land Rovers the FOB was water resistant to 150', which made things easy. Just rinsed it with fresh water with my board.

Thanks all. Storing the key on the car anywhere seems to be a security hazard since anyone can just walk up and unlock the car; the FOB is in close proximity.
The valet key idea was my go-to until I learned that the truck won't allow me to lock the doors with the FOB inside.
I'm hoping someone has the scoop on a way to get around this. For example, in my Jeep Commander that has a remote attached to the key, the valet key will set the alarm off if I use it to unlock the doors. The trick is to open the driver door, press lock on the remote, then start the car briefly. Then you can shut the car off and close the door. It will be locked and the alarm trigger is disarmed. I know this is a long explanation, but looking for something similar.
Seems crazy that a truck meant for outdoor people doesn't have a waterproof remote like the landrover.
Bringing the key onto the water in NOT an option. Every water-proof bag has the potential to leak, especially when getting beat up in the water. I'm sometimes in remote locations, so I am f'd if the FOB gets wet. Not worth the risk

Kind of tedious every time, but couldn't you pop the battery out of the FOB, leave in the car, then use the valet key?

How about getting one of those waterproof iPhone holders that straps to your arm (for say running or outdoor activity) and throw your keys in it..... Compact, out of the way, secure.....

They make small air tight boxes that you could put your keys in and bury it in a easy spot to find...

Update: I got my 2016 Suburban Z71 and installed my hitchsafe. I found that if I wrap the fob in a Fasttrack envelope I could not unlock the door using the sensors - believe me I tried. Fasttrack electronic tags are provided with an envelope that prevents the tag from sending a signal to the electronic toll booths on our Bay Area bridges. So, if you just picked-up four tags at the Fasttrack store and go across the bridge, you do not get charged four tolls.

No idea how you would get one of these cellophane envelopes.

That's why you set it with something else.

In high school I had a the double GM keys so I would type the oval door key to the leash. And call it a day.

I don't know if you even know about these.
