Leaking oil on a 2011 Chevy Tahoe

So I pay attention to my 2011 Chevy Tahoe Z-71 because it has 165000 miles on it. So when I see a spot of oil that is a general seize of a bowl or a tortilla. It has my intention. The oils is continually leaking and I’m taking it to the dealer because I have a warranty on the Tahoe.

So I’m leaking oil and it been going on for about three days. What is the basic consensus as to what the problem could be. The internet says “oil system component failure and leaking engine gaskets.” But stating the above what questions would you have for me if your were my mechanic? I’m guessing it could be a myriad of things without having the Tahoe in front of you. Any suggestions as to how I should pursue this issue?

Any work done on it recently?

Clean with brake clean and add dye to determine where the leak may be. That is what a mechanic should do unless it is a very obvious leak from a specific location. Not sure about the questions a mechanic would ask.

If it's that prevalent a visual inspection likely would show the source. If your mechanic is familiar with these engines he/she shouldn't have too much trouble pinpointing it. If it's not easily located, like @Tahoe14 noted cleanup and dye is the way to go.

Hundred bucks says it's the little oil cooler block-off plate/oil cooler line manifold right above the oil filter. They all leak there eventually. If it's the block-off plate, replace with an ICT Billet plate with the matcing o-ring seal. If it's the cooler lines, replace the gasket with OEM and give it the thinnest coating of black permatex. Let the permatex sit overnight to cure fully before starting. Be very vigilant of the torque spec on those bolts.

if it's under warranty, try to get them to change the rear main seal and conver gasket. even if that's not it, they gotta do a oil pan gasket to get to it. so that will knock out 80% of the leaking spots.

At 160k your right in the window for oil leaks. pretty common. take advantage of the warranty if they arw willing to use it. Just have it all changes.

Well I got a call from the Chevy dealer. lol someone didn’t tighten the oil filter and so I’m going to remind them in person they had it last and changed the oil. So I thank you all for the responses. They are not lost on me. Your comments educate me.

I love it when a shop calls to complain about the last person to work on your car when it was them.

I had a tire shop say the same thing about my wheel studs being all cross threaded and I reminded them they installed tires for me 2 months ago and they got quiet and evened up replacing my studs for free.

I haven’t had it that bad. I think there are stealerships out there. I’m fortunate enough to have a good general manager. I’m not really looking for money off or free service. Although it crossed my mind. Just to let them know I’m watching. It sucks being in the wrong end of dumb but I will say it keeps you honest.
