I had to pull the trigger! I picked it up today. Low mileage,40k, good compression and all. Its on an engine stand in the garage now. Question is, is it worth opening her up and put in a new cam and valve train? I'm thinking change the intake to a ls6 and bigger throttle body at least. My throttle body is eléctric so i need something compatible. Any thoughts?

If you're doing the cam swap now, look into a higher stall converter, too. Easier to do it now that its out, then having to drop the tranny to do it later.

agreed with the others, and I would also mill the heads down about 30-40 thousandths, to up the compression a hell of alot, maybe more so than a stock lq9. Shoot for 10.9:1 or 11:1 compression. :) This can be done for cheap at machine shop approx 75$ a head, and gain you more hp/tq.

Couple that with a cam and stall be near 500hp

Ive been trolling over on ptnet all day looking at options. I want to keep compression low as I want to keep FI as an option and base any cam options on that. Been looking into the aeromotive fuel pump as well. Hard to stay focused with so many options.

I hear what u saying hoe and it would be a lot less $$ to do na. Blown setups just seem to be moré streetable making the same power.

options, options.... lol

I would not even build a engine for FI unless I had a supercharger or turbokit just sitting in the closet at FIRST! IMO people get carried away and never finish their plans. And last I researched, higher compression engines still make more power under boost than lower compression engines.... they also do this by using LESS boost as well, cause the compression is already there.

if you can make 700hp with 5lbs of boost and high compression.
OR
if you can make 700hp with 24lbs of boost and low compression.

you still making 700hp. and I would rather boost my engine with less, than more which may end up hurting it...

on-top of it all, having a healthy engine while out of boost is always a plus, not a slug.

What tranny are you using?

I'm looking at a ls2 with a 4l70, that I'm tempted to pull the trigger on

Curious to see the cam you decide on also, please keep the thread updated for noobs like me looking to make this swap

My goals are much lower than yours lol. 500hp would be good for me and when I say build the motor for boost I mean something like a z06 cam and springs. I'm not looking to go crazy with it. Just really want to get the motor in and running well. a 6ltr with a mild cam shouldn't be too much of a slug.

I'm running a Jasper engine class 1 trans. Its stout, shifts are tight with the shift kit and I have an 11x11 trans cooler and should be good for goals.

I have a ls2 GTO also and I think it is has the same cam as the 01 z06.

I would totally recomend it. I went through very much the same thing you are doing now. I got the lq4, installed a TBSS cam, valve springs, intake and TB while it was on the floor. My only advice is DO NOT cheap out on the headers, there's a reason $900 headers are $900....because they fit...without "modification".

I'm going to resurrect my old thread lol. I hate to see threads/projects start and not ever finish. I ended up doing a Vinci trucker cam 216/224 551/551 115+5lsa. I added a circle d 2600-2800 stall and the combo is strong and has a good choppy idle. It's torquey like I wanted even NA. I have dynatech longtubes with their high flow cats with a magnaflow muffler in place of the stocker. I think I'm going to have to go bigger on the muffler to get more flow..maybe mbrp cat back..

Given I replaced all the gaskets and seals I was happy to see I don't have any leaks.. the Sac City Corvette alignment pieces make putting the front and rear main seals in with no worries. I got most of my hard parts and gaskets from Brian Tooley Racing.. Here are a bunch of pics amd i can say i did it myself..just took a while lol..
