You can get the top bell housing bolts with about a 4' extension. 2WD or 4WD.

Thought about checking for cylinder out of round and taper while you have the pan off? It wouldn’t give you the full picture of the taper or round but it would definitely be a freebie to check it the pan/crank is coming out.

Currently not planning on pulling the crank. I suppose my thread title is a little misleading as the motor is not getting a rebuild. Basically just a replacement of some accessories, fresh gaskets, and other maintenance. I'm sure to some it may seem a little silly to go this far and stop short of a rebuild.

I'll keep this in mind if I do end up needing to tear it down further.

Also, I forgot to mention when I pulled the driver side exhaust manifolds I found that the front bolt was also broken in addition to the rear two bolts. The front and rear bolt snapped flush with the block. Also, one of the bolts on the passenger side was also snapped flush with the block. So, in total I have 3 that are flush with the block, and one with a nub.

Between a damaged heat shield, snapped studs, and needing new gaskets and bolts I plan to just buy new Dorman stock replacement exhaust manifolds which includes everything. Does anyone know if the bolts that come with them are any better then the stock GM bolts, or have a recommendation for exhaust manifold bolts?

ARP.... this was a quick search but they are out there. If you just use the dorman i personally think you wont have to worry about them breaking again while you own the truck but what do i know. I guess if you want to really ‘upgrade’ if you want to call it that, arp would be my choice.E40BC715-D57A-4E51-9B4D-ACA9330A2429.pngDD6CE2A3-68CB-4B14-92E2-DDF4E71AC391.png
