Hello All,

New member here. Is it a good idea to get a 2002 Yukon with 155k miles for $7000 ? No one in my family has an American SUV and all of them look at me like I am crazy to buy one with 150k + miles.

I do like the Tahoe/Yukon styling and want to be sure if I am doing the right thing. How is the reliability on these trucks and at worst at this mileage how much should i set aside for potential repairs ?

Appreciate it...

Not sure how much repairs are. I've got a 99 tahoe with 266k miles and I had to replace the transmissionat 220k. But i never had replaced the fluids. lol. and I just purchased an 03' yukon xl with 223k on it and it is a great vehicle. I would obviously look for abuse. The yukon xl was well taken care of and had paper work from when it was new. I would not buy one that is beat up/torn/dirty. If it is clean and you trust that the seller has taken care of it, i wouldn't hesitate. What options does it have? 7k for a loaded one is nice.

What brands would your family endorse?

I agree that a well cared for truck with 150k is not a problem. My '05 has 132k on it and other than some seat cover wear, it is in excellent shape. I've only had to do the water pump and tie rods.

edited to add: with regards to gas mileage, I see approximately 15 mpg on average (per Driver Information Center). I do about 50/50 highway/city driving. If I'm driving 65mph on the highway, and the A/C is off, I get about 20 mph indicated on the DIC.

I recently bought a Tahoe LT for $5600 with 142k on it. I also got all repair/maintenance records from day one. One owner older couple that had all work done at the dealer they bought it from. They gave me a deal on the rig. If you can get the repair/maintenance records so can know the history of it then the $7k for the rig may be great for your part of the country. I would definitely have it inspected at a qualified shop before purchase. I am a former ASE Master Tech and Service Manager so I did my own inspection. If it checks out, is what you are looking for and meets your needs and you like it, then buy it and try to negotiate the price down as low as can go, especially if has no records with it. The mileage to expect will likely be in the neighborhood of 12-13 combined. Depends on how good the tune related parts are and if throttle bore and MAF are clean. Rear axle ratio? Etc....

I bought a 2002 Suburban with around 150k for $6,000. I have about 172k now and have only replaced the air conditioner and a wheel bearing/hub, but I know there's a few repairs I'll need to make sooner than later.

The factory speakers are tired, but that's a function of age rather than mileage. My power window motors are all on their last legs. I also have a rear main leak that needs to be tackled soon.

No matter how you slice it, vehicles in general, no matter which maker, are going to have repair bills with over 150k miles. Machines wear out. But if you know how to do the work yourself it shouldn't cost you more than a grand to make sure she gets you from A to B.

Edit to add: I drive about 80% freeway and average 16mpg via Fuelly. The most I ever saw was about 19.5mpg going all freeway and decending into Arizona from Utah.

My 02 has 150k and runs like new. I paid 7500 for mine 5 years ago with 113k. I would say if ur paying 7,000 that's to much. More like 4500-5000.
