New Member - Contemplating Grand Cherokee Hemi vs. Tahoe Signature

I like some of the older Toyota/Lexus designs as well. The older sequoia, tundra, land cruiser, and LXs were all among my favorites. I especially wanted a sequoia in 2003-2007 range in a limited package when I sold my previous Durango and was looking for something bigger. But unfortunately I couldn’t find a 4WD with a limited package. So that’s when I started looking for a GM.

That's funny because most of us probably have an apppreciation for all the weird body on frame designed that are still available.
where I live its a good mix of Sequoia/Armada/GM stuff/and Lexus GX/LX. the ford expedition as well.
While most people have switched to uni body Crossover, We still like our truck based SUVs!
Only recently I have been on a weird appreciation for the *** ones!
Check out the new Nissan Armada for example, talk about weird. Its a decontent-patrol. WHich is perfect if I was to get one.

Did the OP mention how much weight would be towed, and what the passenger and space requirements were?

This is a big, thirsty, unwieldy vehicle to drive unless you have to tow a heavy trailer and carry passengers and gear, in which case it’s a good choice.

The Grand Cherokee has less cargo volume (68.3 cu ft)than my 2014 Outback 3.6R (73.3). The upper trim levels have a more sophisticated AWD system than most other SUV’s on the market, though.

^^The GC Hemi is rated at 14/22 MPG, so it’s rated at worse fuel economy than a Tahoe. And you cherry picker lol, with the rear seats up the GC has more cargo room at 36.3 vs Outback’s 35.5

I don't need it for a people hauler. I don't have any kids. Occasional clients.

My towing is also occasional and a short distance. Towing a 34' boat with twin 496's (Mercruiser -- a GM Engine).

I am just contemplating the overall appearance of GC verses the Tahoe, the drive ability, cargo space, and the depreciation.

Having purchased and leased BMW's for so many years, I am frankly tired of paying huge depreciation on vehicles that really don't have much status/look/handiness to them.

Even in the Midwest, anyone who can fog up a mirror has a 3 Series / C-Clas / Lexus / Etc.

Would you consider a Lexus GX460?
Classic, timeless Land Cruiser frame/design, detune v8 from LS460, and super solid compared to Domestic offerings. Your Best buy would be a couple years old low mileage one.
I have lots of friends with LX and GX and its on another level compared to my 15' Suburban.

After thinking about your post, I have been looking at GX460's. They are an amazing vehicle. The exterior and interior fit and finish is absolutely outstanding.
They have a bullet-proof V8 which has been a reliable workhorse for a number of years.
Actually, the price, loaded up nicely is in the $60,000 area. Their re-sale value is outstanding as well.

Their infotainment system is perhaps a hair on the dated side.

The entire vehicle is a bit of a throwback to Toyota's / Land Cruisers / Land Rover's days of old with their upright stance, upright interior, and vast views outside from
within the cabin. Everything is very square--which I actually quite like.

I love this thread because it hits real close to home. I keep on going back and looking at Tahoes even though I own a 2018 GC Summit V8 4x4. Theres just something about the tahoe that drags you in. Its got a stance and persona about itself that is so badass.

The fuel efficiency on my V8 is atrocious. I get its a V8, but there are other more powerful motors on the market that get far better fuel economy. I struggle to maintain a 13mpg mixed use MPG. When I rented a tahoe I was gunning it from light to light (rentals ya know) and I was still at about 16.5. Its crazy that even though its so much bigger and heavier it can still get decent (and better than my GC) in fuel economy.


There a dealer near me with a '18 Tahoe Premier RST (no 6.2L) that is asking just shy of 59k (sticker $68,740). If I can get a good trade in value on my GC I might just have to pull the trigger.

Protect1989 that is a beautiful truck. I don't know how you are resisting and you have been at it for a while. I just caved in and traded a 15 Summit for a 17 Premier and could not be happier. They are awesome trucks even with their issues. Had a problem with my 15 early build and had to Lemon Law but had to come back. Look at all the issues on the two main Jeep boards that we have been involved with. Good luck with your decision. Not much feedback on the RST so far some it would be nice to hear from a real owner.

I have a 2015 JGC Summit and its been a great vehicle, albeit a bit small and have been looking at either the Tahoe or Denali. Couple of questions to help me decide. How would you compare the 4wd systems of each? I live in the Chicago area and we can get some heavy snow in the winter. Also, is the standard 5.3 engine in the Tahoe peppy enough or should I go with the 6.2 in either the Tahoe or Denali (the 6.2 is standard in the Denali). Lastly, it feels like the interior is nicer in the Denali. Is that an accurate feeling or am I wrong? Your thought would be appreciated.

Here's something interesting.

Dealer near me has a Tahoe RST with the 5.3L (see previous post for photos). However it doesn't have the digital instrument cluster. I thought that was standard on the premier trim (the rst is just a dolled up premier). Anyone ever seen that before?
