New rear shocks but some side to side play results in clunk

I've installed some new rear shocks in my 2001 Yukon 1500, but it seems to me that the bushings are slightly narrower than the originals resulting in some very slight side to side movement.
If I tighten more the metal bracket that the shock bushing sits in will start to bend inward. Is that a problem? Or should I look to putting some washers/spacers in their to make up the difference?

I would just tighten it down but washers would be fine to take up the space as well.

Look at how clean that under carriage is!!

If the gap isn't excessive, a little extra tightening of the bracket will be fine. I'd use washers, though. Be sure you tighten it all with the weight of the vehicle on the axle, either by putting it on the ground (with the wheels on!) or supporting it with jack stands under the axle and not the frame.

Replaced with correct shock? Were the originals the Nivomats?

Washers. That is how I have done this in the past with no ill effects.
