awfully loud description of the noise to be piston slap which generally isn't that loud at all and certainly cannot be mistaken for a train....

I assume a bearing of some sort that had no lubrication.

I am no mechanic though but I am very good at watching other people perform the work and hand them tools...

Me too! :D And I'm also really good at talking incessantly and subsequently being banished from the garage.

Changing the oil isn't a bad idea, it has half it's life left, but I'm sure it's got ****** dealership oil in it, Kendall or whatever.

The thing is, I almost always start it up with autostart in the morning, so if it does this on cold starts, I don't hear it in my house. I'll keep a close eye on it till this weekend and we'll change the oil. VDay was yesterday, I'll consider this one of my gifts.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I'll throw it out there. It was at the dealership since June, however it was a import store, so that was the reason I got as to why it hadn't sold. It never hit the lot until October though... The oil was changed in December (or so says the sticker), so it's not old oil, but it's probably been driven more in the last week and a half, than in the last 6 months.

This seems to be a universal trait amongst women as my wife does the same thing......

When you use your AutoStart some morning stick your head out while you're doing it and see if you hear it.

I don't remember exactly what it is, but it's none of the things that anyone has said so far, as I recall. The good news is that there's already a thread here (somewhere) about a loud, brief, metallic sound at start up... Do a search for it -- and maybe someone who has experienced this or the thread can direct you to the culprit.
