Damn it, it did it again and I didn't get it on tape. Figures. This time, I got in, started up and I turned down the temp to to 76, hit the AC button and it made the same groaning metallic noise, lasting a few seconds, with a very slight warble to the tone. This was much louder than the first time and the subsequent time.

So, it appears it definitely has something to do with the heat/ac, nothing to do with outside temp, as the first time it was in the 40's and it's about 75 right now.I hope it's something as simple as a computer flash and not a dying compressor. Aside from the noise, everything else works great, AC is super cold, no hiccups or issues at all.

The oil didn't get changed this weekend, hubby did a few chores that got him off the hook.
